National Opposition Union (Guatemala)
National Opposition Union ( es, Unión Nacional Opositora, UNO) was a Nicaraguan wide-range coalition of opposition parties formed to oppose president Daniel Ortega's Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in the 1990 election. Its candidate Violeta Chamorro eventually won the race. UNO traced its origins back to the Nicaraguan Democratic Coordinating Group (Coordinadora Democrática Nicaragüense—CDN), which was formed in 1982 by different opposition groups. At the time of the election, of the UNO coalition's fourteen political parties, four were considered conservative, seven could be characterised as centrist parties, and three – including Nicaragua's Communists – had traditionally been on the far left of the political spectrum. The National Opposing Union ( es, Unión Nacional Opositora, abbreviated as UNO) was a Salvadoran political coalition which existed from 1972 to 1979. The coalition was composed of the Christian Democratic Party, the National Revolutionary Movement, and the Nationalist Democratic Union. Miriam Argüello
Miriam Argüello Morales (February 22, 1927 – February 7, 2019) was a politician from Nicaragua. A lawyer by training, she was the first woman to become president of the National Assembly of Nicaragua, where she served as a deputy for 22 years. She was elected Assembly president in 1990, defeating Alfredo César Aguirre though he had the support of Nicaraguan President Violeta Chamorro. However, César prevailed the following year, replacing Argüello in 1991. In 1996, Argüello ran for President of Nicaragua as a member of the Popular Conservative Alliance (APC). Popular Social Christian Party
The Popular Social Christian Party ( - PPSC), was a Nicaraguan political party. It was an offshoot of the Social Christian Party formed in the late 1970s when Manolo Morales led schism from the PSC. The party supported the FSLN against the Somoza regime, but after Somoza's fall from power they ran against the Sandinistas. The PPSC advocated for mixed economy rather than the fully socialist vision of the FSLN. The PPSC won 6 seats (out of 90) in the 1984 Legislative elections and 3 seats (out of 110) seats in the 1990 elections. The Independent Liberal Party ( es, Partido Liberal Independiente - PLI) is a Nicaraguan political party, which separated from Somoza's Nationalist Liberal Party (PLN) in 1944 and took part in the probably fraudulent election of 1947, won by Somoza's favored candidate. The PLI participated in the 1984 election, winning 9.6% of vote for President with its candidate Virgilio Godoy. Eli Altamirano Pérez (1934-2006) was a Nicaraguan politician and trade unionist. He served as the general secretary of the Communist Party of Nicaragua for a quarter century. Biography Altamirano was born in Chinandega on February 27, 1934. His parents were Angel Maria Altamirano Gutierrez and Mercedes Perez Altamirano. He studied up to the fourth grade at the Escuela Superior de Varones in Chinandega. In 1956 Altamirano was jailed thrice, during the wave of repression that took place after the killing of Anastasio Somoza García.
