National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE)
National Medical Rescue Team ( tr, Ulusal Medikal Kurtarma Ekibi, UMKE) is a governmental emergency service organization for medical assistance in natural disasters and accidents. UMKE is part of the Ministry of Health. It is specialized in medical disaster relief at site. In addition to the first aid at the site of extraordinary events, it also provides health care with other medical personnel at nearby hospitals to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or promote recovery. Following the August 17 İzmit and November 12 Düzce earthquakes in Turkey in 1999, a restructuring of the emergency organizations in the country became inevitable. 1999 İzmit Earthquake
On the 17th of August, 1999 at 3:01 AM local time, a catastrophic magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Kocaeli Province of Turkey, causing monumental damage and 17,127–18,373 deaths. Named for the quakes proximity to the northeastern city of Izmit, the earthquake is also commonly referred to as the August 17 Earthquake or the 1999 Gölcük Earthquake. The earthquake occurred on 00:01 UTC at a shallow depth of 15 km. A maximum Mercalli intensity of X (''Extreme'') was observed, marking this event as one of the most destructive earthquakes in the history of the region. The earthquake lasted for 37 seconds, causing seismic damage and becoming widely remembered as one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern Turkish history. 1999 Düzce Earthquake
The 1999 Düzce earthquake occurred on 12 November at with a moment magnitude of 7.2 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent''), causing damage and at least 845 fatalities in Düzce, Turkey. The epicenter was approximately to the east of the extremely destructive 1999 İzmit earthquake that happened a few months earlier. Both strike-slip earthquakes were caused by movement on the North Anatolian Fault.
