National Lampoon The 199th Birthday Book
''National Lampoon The 199th Birthday Book: A Tribute to the United States of America, 1776–1975'' was an American humor book that was issued in 1975 in paperback. Although it appears to be a regular book, it was a "special issue" of ''National Lampoon'' magazine, and therefore was sold on newsstands rather than in bookstores. The book was a collection of new material and was ''not'' an anthology of already published material. The "199th Birthday" of the title is a reference to the fact that in 1976 the United States celebrated its 200th birthday, (the Bicentennial), thus in 1975 when this book was published the United States was 199 years old. The cover art was photographed by Arky & Barrett was conceived and art-directed by Michael C. Gross. Tony Hendra
Anthony Christopher "Tony" Hendra (10 July 1941 – 4 March 2021) was an English satirist, actor and writer who worked mostly in the United States. Educated at St Albans School (where he was a classmate of Stephen Hawking) and at St John's College, Cambridge, he was a member of the Cambridge University Footlights revue in 1962, alongside John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Tim Brooke-Taylor. Hendra was probably best known for being the head writer and co-producer in 1984 of the first six shows of the long-running British satirical television series ''Spitting Image'' and for starring in the film ''This Is Spinal Tap'' as the band's manager Ian Faith. Michael O'Donoghue
Michael O'Donoghue (January 5, 1940 – November 8, 1994) was an American writer and performer. He was known for his dark and destructive style of comedy and humor, was a major contributor to ''National Lampoon'' magazine, and was the first head writer of ''Saturday Night Live''. He was also the first performer to utter a line on that series. Early life O'Donoghue was born Michael Henry Donohue in Sauquoit, New York. His father, Michael, worked as an engineer, while his mother, Barbara, stayed home to raise him. Noel Sickles
Noel Douglas Sickles (January 24, 1910 – October 3, 1982) was an American commercial illustrator and cartoonist, best known for the comic strip '' Scorchy Smith''. Sickles was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. Largely self-taught, his career began as a political cartoonist for the ''Ohio State Journal'' in the late 1920s. At that time he met and shared a studio with cartoonist Milton Caniff, then working for the ''Columbus Dispatch''. Sickles followed Caniff, creator of the ''Terry and the Pirates'' comic strip, to New York City in 1933, where both men initially worked as staff artists for the Associated Press. ''Scorchy Smith'' Sickles was assigned to the action/adventure comic ''Scorchy Smith'', whose creator, John Terry, was suffering from tuberculosis. Jeffrey Catherine Jones
Jeffrey Catherine Jones (January 10, 1944 – May 19, 2011) was an American artist whose work is best known from the late 1960s through the 2000s. Jones created the cover art for more than 150 books through 1976, as well as venturing into fine art during and after this time. Fantasy artist Frank Frazetta called Jones "the greatest living painter". Although Jones first achieved fame as simply Jeff Jones and later as Jeffrey Jones, after 1998 she transitioned to female and added Catherine as a middle name. Gahan Allen Wilson (February 18, 1930 – November 21, 2019) was an American author, cartoonist and illustrator known for his cartoons depicting horror-fantasy situations. Sam Gross (born August 7, 1933) is an American cartoonist, specializing in single-panel cartoons. History Born in Bronx, New York City, Gross was the son of Max and Sophie, who were Jewish immigrants to America. His mother was born in Iași, Romania and his father was born in Lithuania. His parents came to the United States as children around 1905. Gross' ability to draw came from his mother's artistic side of the family. His father was a CPA, which is why Gross is so well-organized. Gross attended DeWitt Clinton High School, which at the time was an all-boys school. After he graduated, Gross went to City College. Frank Frazetta (born Frank Frazzetta ; February 9, 1928 – May 10, 2010) was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, LP record album covers, and other media. Douglas Clark Francis Kenney (December 10, 1946 – August 27, 1980) was an American comedy writer of magazine, novels, radio, TV and film who co-founded the magazine ''National Lampoon'' in 1970.
