National Jewish Commission On Law And Public Affairs (COLPA)
The National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs (COLPA) is a voluntary association of attorneys whose purpose is to represent the observant Jewish community on legal, legislative, and public-affairs matters. It was founded by Dr. Marvin Schick in 1965, who served as its first president. Successors to Schick include Howard Rhine and ''Sidney Kwestel'' Others who have served in that capacity include Julius Berman, Howard J. Zuckerman, and Allen Rothenberg, its current president. Dennis Rapps is COLPA's Executive Director. Attorney at law or attorney-at-law, usually abbreviated in everyday speech to attorney, is the preferred term for a practising lawyer in certain jurisdictions, including South Africa (for certain lawyers), Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the United States. Marvin Schick
Marvin Schick (July 3, 1934 – April 23, 2020) was a Hunter College and The New School, New School for Social Research political science and constitutional law professor. Julius Berman
Julius "Julie" Berman (born 1935) is an American attorney and Orthodox rabbi. He is involved in many large Jewish organizations, many of them non-denominational, and has served in key leadership positions. Early life and education Berman was born in Dūkštas, Lithuania and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Henoch, a rabbi, and shochet and Sarah Berman. He first attended Yeshiva of Hartford elementary school, and was in its first graduating class. He graduated from Yeshiva Torah Vodaas high school in 1952. Nathan Lewin
Nathan Lewin (born January 31, 1936) is an American attorney who has argued many cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. Early life and education Lewin was born in Łódź, Poland. His grandfather, the chief rabbi of Rzeszow, was elected to and served twice as a member of the Polish Legislature (“Sejm”). Lewin’s father, who was elected twice to the Lodz City Council, was later a professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University’s Bernard Revel Graduate School and a prolific author in Polish, Yiddish, Hebrew, and English. Lewin's family fled Poland just ahead of the Nazis in 1939, and arrived in the United States in 1941, where Lewin grew up in New York City. He is a Sugihara survivor.
