National Highway 10 (NH 10) (old NH 31A) is a national highway in North East India that connects Indo/Bangladesh border via Siliguri to Gangtok. It passes through the Indian states of West Bengal and Sikkim. Route NH10 starts from Indo/Bangladesh border connecting Phulbari, Siliguri, Sevoke, Kalijhora, Rambi Bazar, Teesta Bazaar, Kalimpong, Melli in West Bengal and Rangpo, Majitar, Singtam, Ranipool and terminating at Gangtok in the State of Sikkim. Atal Setu Bridge, the longest roadway bridge of sikkim is also the part of National Highway 10 which lies on the border of West Bengal's Kalimpong district and Sikkim's Pakyong District at the town of Rangpo. Melli
Melli (also spelled Malli) is a town on the West Bengal-Sikkim border near the River Teesta. The town consists of two markets, one lying on NH10 in Kalimpong district of West Bengal and the other in Namchi district of Sikkim. Melli Railway Station of Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line lies in Melli at Kalimpong district, West Bengal. Melli in the Nepali language means "the place where the dead are cremated". Melli is one of the few towns in India that lies in two different states Kalimpong district of West Bengal and South Sikkim district of Sikkim. National Highways Development Project
The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) is a project to upgrade, rehabilitate and widen major highways in India to a higher standard. The project was started in 1998 under the leadership of Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. National Highways account for only about 2% of the total length of roads, but carry about 40% of the total traffic across the length and breadth of the country. This project is managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways. The NHDP represents 49,260 km of roads and highways work and construction in order to boost economic development of the country. The government has planned to end the NHDP program in early 2018 and subsume the ongoing projects under a larger Bharatmala project. List Of National Highways In India
On 28 April 2010, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways officially published a new numbering system for the National Highway network in the Gazette of the Government of India. It is a systematic numbering scheme based on the orientation and the geographic location of the highway. This was adopted to ensure more flexibility and consistency in the numbering of existing and new national highways. Ranipool is a small suburban town located in the bank of river Ranikhola at the junction of National Highway 10 and National Highway 717A in Gangtok District of the Indian state of Sikkim. Singtam is a town which lies mostly in Gangtok District and partly in Pakyong District in the Indian state of Sikkim about from the state capital Gangtok.
