National Campus Band Competition
The National Campus Music Competition (previously known as the National Campus Band Competition) is an annual Australian music competition specifically for tertiary students. The comp was created in 1990 by members of the volunteer organisation, ''Australian Association of Campus Activities,'' which later become a part of the Tertiary Access Group (TAG). The first Adelaide Student Band Competition was held in 1983 and the Victorian Student Band Competition was held in 1986, after an observation by Activities Officers on campus, that there were hundreds of student bands with nowhere to play, and needed an extra incentive to have a go. The brain-child of a bunch of Campus Activities Officers was enacted by posters on campus, and the response was staggering. The competition was such a success that by 1990 it went national. George (band)
George (stylised as george) were an Australian rock band from Brisbane, Queensland. The band's first album, ''Polyserena'', reached No. 1 on the Australian charts on 17 March 2002. Background For most of george's career, the band consisted of Katie Noonan on vocals and keyboards, her brother Tyrone Noonan on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Geoff Green on drums and percussion, Paulie Bromley on bass guitar and Nick Stewart on guitar. Geoff Hooton, a bass guitar player, left the band in early 2000 and was replaced by Bromley. The band was originally founded by the Noonans, Stewart and Stewart's twin brother James. The latter would leave the band early on, however, to pursue a career in acting. The Noonans formed the nucleus of the band, doing most of the songwriting and lead vocals. Frenzal Rhomb
Frenzal Rhomb are an Australian punk rock band that formed in 1992 in Sydney. Three of the group's albums have entered the top 20 on the ARIA Albums Chart: ''A Man's Not a Camel'' (1999), '' Hi-Vis High Tea'' (2017) and ''Smoko at the Pet Food Factory'' (2011). '' Hi-Vis High Tea'' reached 9th position in the charts. The group has supported Australian tours by The Offspring, Bad Religion, NOFX, and Blink-182. Moaning Lisa (band)
Moaning Lisa are an Australian rock band formed in Canberra in 2016. The group has released two EPs, ''The Sweetest'' in 2017, and ''Do You Know Enough?'' in 2018. The four members of Moaning Lisa studied music in Canberra. They are singer-bassist Charlie Versegi, singer-guitarist Hayley Manwaring, lead guitarist Ellen Chan, and drummer Hayden Fritzlaff. Their music has been described as punk rock, grunge rock, and shoegaze. In 2016, they won the National Campus Band Competition, and garnered media coverage for speaking out against anti-social behaviour at gigs. In January 2018, their single "Carrie (I Want a Girl)", referencing Carrie Brownstein, was lauded as an anthem for the LGBT community. The Australian Capital Territory (commonly abbreviated as ACT), known as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) until 1938, is a landlocked federal territory of Australia containing the national capital Canberra and some surrounding townships. Slow Turismo
Slow Turismo are an Australian indie pop band from Canberra, which were formed in 2015. The three Conway brothers: Sam (vocals, guitar), Max (vocals, guitar) and Riley (drums), were all previously members of an indie and alternative rock quartet, Rubycon, with Reuben Styles (later of Peking Duk). Slow Turismo released their debut extended play in July 2015 and have followed with singles. The group have toured Australia. Will Stoker And The Embers
Will Stoker and the Embers are a band based in Perth, Western Australia fronted by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Will Stoker. In 2007 they won the Western Australian final of the National Campus Band Competition and then went to Melbourne to win the national final. They have also received a public voted nomination for Favourite Newcomer at the West Australian Music Industry Association awards 2009. Guitarist Luke Dux and Bassist Ryan Dux also won industry voted awards for Best Guitarist and Best Bassist respectively. The Embers (Tasmanian Band)
The Embers are an Australian roots-fusion band formed in Launceston in late 2005 by mainstays Michael Attard on acoustic guitar, lead vocals and harmonica; and Katy Humphries on saxophone, violin and backing vocals. They perform classical, jazz, folk, country and traditional Mexican music. They disbanded in 2008 and reformed in 2011, they released their debut studio album, ''Bright'', in March 2015. The Preytells
The Preytells were an Australian indie rock band from Perth, formed in 2004 by Jessicca Bennett (a.k.a. Audrey Tell) on lead guitar and backing vocals, Simon Okely (a.k.a. The Vasco Era
The Vasco Era were an Australian three piece rock/blues band based in Melbourne. Career Originally from Apollo Bay, but now based in Melbourne, the band's members are brothers Sid (vocals, guitar, lapsteel, rototoms) and Ted (bass) O'Neil and Michael Fitzgerald (drums).
