National Cadet Corps (Sri Lanka)
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a youth organisation in Sri Lanka, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, which operates in schools, and normally includes Army, Navy and Air Force sections. The corp is open for secondary school students on voluntary basis and its officers are government teachers and educational administrators, who serve as instructors. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades, as well as leadership training. Currently administrated under the ''Mobilization and Supplementary Forces Act, No. 40 of 1985'', it was established in 1881 and was formally known as the ''Ceylon Cadet Corps''. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military service. Officers many volunteer for secondment to the Sri Lanka Armed forces during national emergencies or be mobilized under National Service. The Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) is the active-duty volunteer reserve force of the Sri Lanka Army. The SLAVF is separate from the Regular Force (known as the ''regular army'') which consists of personal who are professional soldiers and its Regular Reserve, which comprises personal who have a mobilization obligation following their service in the regular army. Colonel Sidney Arnold Pakeman, CBE, MC, ED (4 January 1891 – 15 June 1975) was a British academic and a member of the Parliament of Ceylon. Early life and education Sidney Arnold Pakeman was born in Bristol, England on 1 April 1891, the son of Thomas Lovell Pakeman, a draper and undertaker. He attended Bristol Grammar School between 1903 and 1910. Military service He served in the British Army in the Wiltshire Regiment 4th Battalion, attached to the Gloucestershire Regiment, during the First World War. Compulsory Leadership Training For Undergraduates
Compulsory leadership training for undergraduates in Sri Lanka is a mandatory program introduced in 2011 by the Sri Lankan Government for all students select for undergraduate courses in state universities to undergo residential three-week leadership training and positive thinking development at training camps under the Defence Ministry which as lead to much controversy. The Sri Lankan Higher Education Ministry sought the university academics' and vice chancellors' views on the ongoing leadership training program and decided to reduce it from three weeks to two weeks. Proponents It has been claimed by the Government that this program has been launched to increase employability of graduates thus reducing the high graduate unemployment in state universities. 10,000 students have been earmarked for the first group of training starting May 22, 2011, and a second group of 12,000 is set to follow on June 22 in order to cover the 2011-2012 state university undergraduate intake. Hermann Albert Loos
Hermann Albert Loos (21 July 1865-????) was a Ceylonese lawyer, judge and legislator. He was an unofficial member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon. Born in Colombo to Frederick Charles Loos, member of the Legislative Counci and Jane Harriet Keith, he was educated privately before studying at the City of London School, University College, London and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge graduating in 1887 and was called to the bar as a barrister at the Inner Temple. On his return to Ceylon he was admitted as an advocate of the Supreme Court and became private secretary to Justice Lovell Burchett Clarence. He started his own practice in the unofficial bar in 1890, and joined the Attorney Generals Department as Acting Office Assistant and Additional Crown Counsel. Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), Trincomalee, is the naval academy of the Sri Lanka Navy, and is located within SLN Dockyard, Trincomalee. Volunteer Force Training School
The Volunteer Force Training School Diyatalawa (VFTS Diyatalawa) is the primary training facility for the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. Traditionally, training of the Ceylon Defence Force took place at Diyatalawa Garrison with the annual training camp becoming a regular fixture. This practice continued after the formation of the Ceylon Army in 1949, with the CDF camp been renamed as the Volunteer Force Training Centre and tasked with the training of personal of the Ceylon Volunteer Force and Ceylon Cadet Corps.
