National Blood Donation Week
In the United States, the first full week of September is designated National Blood Donation Week. Established in 2016, the week United States is to hold individual state blood donation days. This serves to assist blood banks all over the country to keep their shelves full and to raise awareness of the continual need to donate blood and blood products. The final day of the week holds most of the states' blood donation days, and is known as National Blood Donation Day. Background 2016 was plagued with massive reports of blood bank supply shortages. Orlando Nightclub Shooting
On , 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man, killed 49 people and wounded 53 more in a mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States. Orlando Police officers shot and killed him after a three-hour standoff. In a 9-1-1 call made shortly after the shooting began, Mateen swore allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and said the U.S. killing of Abu Waheeb in Iraq the previous month "triggered" the shooting. Daliah Wachs
Daliah Wachs (born Daliah Zodieru, June 16, 1971) is an American physician and radio personality, who hosts the "Dr. Daliah" radio show. As a board certified family physician, Wachs began broadcasting her own radio show on KLAV in Las Vegas, Nevada in early 2009 to provide free on-air medical during the recession. Since 2011, this show has been syndicated nationally in the United States by the Genesis Communications Network. She has been involved in a number of national health campaigns, including to promote blood donation and abolish daylight savings time. Brian Sandoval
Brian Edward Sandoval (; born August 5, 1963) is an American politician, academic administrator, and former federal judge who served as the 29th Governor of Nevada from 2011 to 2019. A graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, Sandoval began his political career in the early 1990s. In 1998 he was appointed to be a member of the Nevada Gaming Commission and later served as the Commission's chairman from 1999 to 2001. A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for blood transfusion, transfusions and/or made into biopharmaceutical medications by a process called Blood fractionation, fractionation (separation of whole blood components). Donation may be of whole blood, or of specific components directly (apheresis). Blood banks often participate in the collection process as well as the procedures that follow it. Today in the developed world, most blood donors are unpaid volunteers who donate blood for a community supply. In some countries, established supplies are limited and donors usually give blood when family or friends need a transfusion (directed donation).
