National Black Arts Alliance
The National Black Arts Alliance (NBAA), originally known as the Black Arts Alliance (BAA) when it was established in 1985, is a British national members' network committed to the development of arts and artists from Black cultural communities through advocacy, training and events. The Alliance was formed by a group of community artists attending the Sheldon Trust, "who considered that Black art was being marginalised in the UK by funders, art audiences, and politicians alike", and it became the UK's largest network of Black artists, working across all artforms with a wide range of both national and international artists (including Ntozake Shange, August Wilson and James Early). A registered charity run by Black artists, NBAA is managed by a board of trustees and a development group of active members, with membership is open to Black artists, cultural activists and those who facilitate and enable their work. Alison Donnell
Alison Donnell is an academic, originally from the United Kingdom. She is Professor of Modern Literatures and Head of thSchool of Literature, Drama and Creative Writingat the University of East Anglia. She was previously Head of School of Literature and Languages at the University of Reading, where she also founded the research theme "Minority Identities: Rights and Representations". Her primary research field is anglophone postcolonial literature,* and she has been published widely on Caribbean and Black British literature. Much of her academic work also focuses questions relating to gender and sexual identities and the intersections between feminism and postcolonialism. August Wilson
August Wilson ( Frederick August Kittel Jr.; April 27, 1945 – October 2, 2005) was an American playwright. He has been referred to as the "theater's poet of Black America". He is best known for a series of ten plays, collectively called ' (or ''The Century Cycle'')'','' which chronicle the experiences and heritage of the African-American community in the 20th century. Plays in the series include ''Fences'' (1987) and ''The Piano Lesson'' (1990), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as ''Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'' (1984) and ''Joe Turner's Come and Gone'' (1988). In 2006, Wilson was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. His works delve into the African-American experience as well as examinations of the human condition. The Royal National Theatre in London, commonly known as the National Theatre (NT), is one of the United Kingdom's three most prominent publicly funded performing arts venues, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House. SuAndi
SuAndi OBE is a British performance poet, writer and arts curator. Based in North West England, she is particularly acknowledged for raising the profile of black artists in the region as well as nationally. Since 1985 she has been Cultural Director of the National Black Arts Alliance. She was appointed an OBE in 1999 for her contributions to the Black Arts sector. Life Susan Maria Andi was born as in Hulme, Manchester, North West England, to a British mother from Liverpool with Irish Catholic roots and a Nigerian seaman father; her self-styled name SuAndi "conjoins her personal and paternal names, and registers the convergence of different histories and ethnicities in her family". Platform London is an interdisciplinary London-based art and campaigning collective founded in 1983 that creates projects with social justice and environmental justice themes. Platform describes itself as "bringing together environmentalists, artists, human rights campaigners, educationalists and community activists to create innovative projects driven by the need for social and environmental justice. This interdisciplinary approach combines the transformatory power of art with the tangible goals of campaigning, the rigour of in-depth research with the vision to promote alternative futures." Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre
The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre is "one of Europe's leading specialist libraries on migration, race and ethnicity" open to members of the public as well as to students and researchers. It increases access to and visibility of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) histories with a growing archive of material relating to the local area. Black British Culture
Black is a color which results from the absence or complete absorption of visible light. It is an achromatic color, without hue, like white and grey.
