National Archives Of Suriname
The National Archives of Suriname are located in Paramaribo. The Landsarchiefdienst was founded on 10 November 1956 as a national oversight for the archives of the ministries. In 1982, the Staatsarchief was founded by the Ministry of Education. In 1989, the two archives were merged, and in 2006, the name was changed to National Archives. In January 2017, the last Surinamese archives from the Dutch colonial period were repatriated from the Netherlands to Suriname, completing a project that started in 2009. Before repatriating the archives, the Dutch Nationaal Archief scanned the whole inventory, making sure the archives remain available to researchers from the rest of the world as well. Paramaribo
Paramaribo (; ; nicknamed Par'bo) is the capital and largest city of Suriname, located on the banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo District. Paramaribo has a population of roughly 241,000 people (2012 census), almost half of Suriname's population. The historic inner city of Paramaribo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Name The city is named for the Paramaribo tribe living at the mouth of the Suriname River; the name is from Tupi–Guarani ''para'' "large river" + ''maribo'' "inhabitants". History The name Paramaribo is probably a corruption of the name of an Indian village, spelled Parmurbo in the earliest Dutch sources. Nationaal Archief
The Nationaal Archief (NA) is the national archives of the Netherlands, located in The Hague. It houses collections for the central government, the province of South Holland, and the former County of Holland. There is also material from private institutions and individuals with an association to the Dutch government or the political or social history of the Netherlands. The ''Nationaal Archief'' holds the Archives of the Dutch East India Company from 1602–1811, which were, along with related records held by South Africa, India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme Register in 2003 in recognition of their historical value. Recently, the photographic archives of Spaarnestad Photo were included in the Nationaal Archief. It has been announced that Wikipedia will receive user rights over many photos from these archives. Willoughbyland
Surinam, also known as Willoughbyland, was a short-lived early English colony in South America in what is now Suriname. It was founded in 1650 by Lord Willoughby when he was the Royalist Governor of Barbados. History In 1598 Lawrence Kemys, leading an expedition to the Guianas on behalf of Walter Raleigh, passed a river he called "''Shurinama''". In 1613, a short-lived Dutch trading post had been established inside the mouth of the Suriname River, near an Amerindian village called " Parmurbo". In 1630, British settlers made the first European attempt at colonization at Marshall's Creek, a tributary of the Suriname.
