National Archives Of Haiti
The National Archives of Haiti were first established in 1860. The archives hold the records of the office of the President and most government ministries. They are currently participating in the Digital Library of the Caribbean's ''Protecting Haitian Patrimony Initiative.'' History The Archives Nationales d'Haiti (ANH) were created by a Presidential Decree on August 20, 1860. The Decree occurred under the government of Fabre Geffrard (1859-1867). The Decree established the "General Archives of Finances" which were the Republic of Haiti's first formal and official archives. Although the government had at an early time legislated on the issue of Archives, after Geffrard the institution was never granted the attention it deserved. From 1868 to 1921, the Archives was abandoned. This included the Celebration of the first Centennial of Independence in 1904. Fabre Geffrard
Guillaume Fabre Nicolas Geffrard (19 September 1806 – 31 December 1878) was a Mulatto Haitians, mulatto general in the Haitian Military of Haiti, army and President of Haiti from 1859 until his deposition in 1867. On 18 April 1852, Faustin Soulouque made him Duke of Tabara. After collaborating in a coup to remove Faustin Soulouque from power in order to return Haiti to the social and political control of the colored elite, Geffrard was made president in 1859. To placate the peasants he renewed the practice of selling state-owned lands and ended a schism with the Roman Catholic Church which then took on an important role in improving education. After surviving several rebellions, he was overthrown by Major Sylvain Salnave in 1867. The Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) is the oldest professional Area studies, Area Studies library organization for Librarian, academic librarians, archivists, Bookselling, book vendors, scholars, and students who specialize in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Members are from at least 20 different countries. SALALM promotes better library services and purchasing power among individual members and member libraries. With the Secretariat based at Tulane University's Latin American Library, it is an international non-profit professional organization with three official languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese. SALALM is an affiliate of the American Library Association. 2010 Haiti Earthquake
A disaster, catastrophic Moment magnitude scale, magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake struck Haiti at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. The epicenter was near the town of Léogâne, Ouest (department), Ouest department, approximately west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death toll estimates range from 100,000 to about 160,000 to Haitian government figures from 220,000 to 316,000, although these latter figures are a matter of some dispute. Haitian Declaration Of Independence
The Haitian Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on 1 January 1804 in the port city of Gonaïves by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, marking the end of 13-year long Haitian Revolution. The declaration marked Haiti becoming the first independent nation of Latin America and only the second in the Americas after the United States. Notably, the Haitian declaration of independence signalled the culmination of the only successful slave revolution in history. Only two copies of the original printed version exist. Both of these were discovered by Julia Gaffield, a Duke University postgraduate student, in the UK National Archives in 2010 and 2011. They are currently held by The National Archives, Kew.
