National Air Tour
The Ford Reliability Tour, properly called "The National Air Tour for the Edsel B. Ford Reliability Trophy", was a series of aerial tours sponsored in part by Ford from 1925 to 1931 and re-created in 2003. Top prize was the Edsel Ford Reliability Trophy. Henry and Edsel Ford were shareholders in the Stout Engineering Company. In August 1925, they purchased the entire company, making it the Stout Metal Airplane Division of the Ford Motor Company. Their product, the Stout 2-AT Pullman, was a featured plane. The plane was also used by their new airline the Ford Air Transport Service, which started regular flights in April. The flights out of Ford Airport (Dearborn) cross-marketed, and showcased Ford's new interest in aviation. Awards *Edsel B. Wilfred Yackey
Wilfred Anthony (Tony) Yackey, Jr. (August 27, 1890 – October 4, 1927), known professionally as W.A. Yackey, was an airplane pioneer of the 1920s. A veteran pilot of World War I, he flew for both the United States and Italian Air Force, and was decorated with the Croix de Guerre by the French government for acts of heroism against the enemy. Returning to the United States, he settled outside of Chicago and operated the Checkerboard Aviation Field in Maywood, Illinois. From this area he would start a flying school, advertised as one of the oldest flying schools in the United States at the time. He would also start the Yackey Aircraft Company, first modifying surplus World War I planes for civilian private and commercial use, and later manufacturing planes of his own design. Edward Anderson Stinson, Jr. (July 11, 1893 – January 26, 1932) was an American pilot and aircraft manufacturer. "Eddie" Stinson was the founder of Stinson Aircraft Company. At the time of his death in 1932 in an air crash, he was the world's most experienced pilot in flight hours, with over 16,000 hours logged. Biography Stinson was born on July 11, 1893 in Fort Payne, Alabama. His oldest sister, Katherine, was an early female aviator, and he wanted to fly as well. In September 1913, he learned to fly at the Wright School in Dayton, Ohio, from Roderick L. Wright. He then helped support the family's Stinson School of Flying, at the Stinson Municipal Airport, earning his FAI certificate in 1915. In World War I, he served as a flight instructor for the United States Army Air Corps at Kelly Field. Vance Breese
Vance Breese (1904–1973) was an American Aeronautical engineer, aviation engineer and test pilot. Early years Vance Breese was born in Keystone, Washington, on April 20, 1904. His education, in his own words was: "various engineering extension courses." More than an engineer, he devoted his life to aviation. Aviation career In 1926, Breese founded the (Vance) Breese Aircraft Company at Mills Field, San Francisco and was its president, from 1927 to 1934. Competing in the 1926 National Air Tour, flying a Ryan M-1 monoplane with a Wright J-4 engine, he finished in eighth place, although he had actually been in first place when he reached Cleveland, Ohio, one of 14 cities in the competition. The Travel Air 2000/3000/4000 (originally, the Model A, Model B and Model BH were open-cockpit biplane aircraft produced in the United States in the late 1920s by the Travel Air Manufacturing Company. The Buhl-Verville CA-3 Airster (also known as the J4 Airster, after its engine), was a utility aircraft built in the United States in 1926, notable as the first aircraft to receive a type certificate in the US, (i.e. A.T.C. No. 1) issued by the Aeronautics Branch of the Department of Commerce on March 29, 1927. It was a conventional single-bay biplane with equal-span unstaggered wings and accommodation for the pilot and passengers in tandem open cockpits. Marketed for a variety of roles including crop-dusting, aerial photography, and freight carriage, only a handful were built, some with water-cooled engines as the CW-3, and others with air-cooled engines as the CA-3 . The Pitcairn PA-2 Sesquiwing "Arrow" is an early biplane designed for air racing and commercial airmail service. Design The Biplane#Sesquiplane, Sesquiwing featured a quick change motor mount to accommodate a Curtiss C-6 or Curtiss OX-5 engine, and wheel Aircraft fairing, fairings for speed. Operational history A specially built PA-2 was flown by Jim Ray in the 1926 Ford National Reliability Air Tour. It placed second in a race for engines under 800 cubic inches displacement, then it had its engine swapped to an OX-5 for a race the next day, and again back to a Curtiss C-6 engine the next day to win the Detroit race.
