Nathan Wild House
The Nathan Wild House is an historic building in Valatie, Columbia County, New York, United States. Built by Nathan Wild, a prominent local figure, in 1826, the original Federal-style building was continually expanded throughout the years as the Wild family's textile mills in the area flourished. The residence was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 as a result of its historical and architectural significance. Description The Nathan Wild House is located on Main Street ( New York State Route 203) in the village of Valatie, south of Albany, New York. It is situated on a lot, which extends a full block. The house itself faces southward toward the road. It was built as a two-story, wood-frame Federal-style structure and eventually expanded using Italianate architecture. Valatie, New York
Valatie (; ) is a village with several waterfalls in Columbia County, New York, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. The village is at the center of the town of Kinderhook on US 9. History Valatie was first named ''Pachaquak'', meaning "cleared meadow", by the earliest Native American settlers—Algonquian Mohicans—who lived along the banks of Valatie's two waterways now referred to as Valatie Kill and Kinderhook Creek. Part of the original New Netherland, the first European settlers were the Dutch who settled Kinderhook around 1665, and named this area "Vaaltje", meaning "little falls". The first post office was established in 1832. By the early 19th century there were nine cotton mills in Valatje operating on power derived from the famous waterfalls; the village was incorporated in 1856. A spindle is a straight spike usually made from wood used for spinning (textiles), spinning, twisting fibers such as wool, flax, hemp, cotton into Thread (yarn), yarn. Wild's Mill Complex
Wild's Mill Complex (also known as Valatie Mill Complex) was among the last remaining industrial buildings in the formerly thriving milling community of Valatie, Columbia County, New York, United States. It was located southeast of the intersection between U.S. Route 9 and State Route 203. A five-story brick structure, it served as an historical landmark and its lot contained the ruins of a previous mill. It was situated along the west bank of the Kinderhook Creek. The original northern section of the building was built in 1846, at long and wide. Its builder is unknown. A large addition was constructed around 1890. The owner of the mills, Nathan Wild, emigrated from England in the early 19th century and ultimately moved to Columbia County. Power Loom
A power loom is a mechanized loom, and was one of the key developments in the industrialization of weaving during the early Industrial Revolution. The first power loom was designed in 1786 by Edmund Cartwright and first built that same year. It was refined over the next 47 years until a design by the Howard and Bullough company made the operation completely automatic. This device was designed in 1834 by James Bullough and William Kenworthy, and was named the Lancashire loom. By the year 1850, there were a total of around 260,000 power loom operations in England. Two years later came the Northrop loom which replenished the shuttle when it was empty. This replaced the Lancashire loom.
