Nathan H. Gordon
Nathan Harry Gordon (1872 - 1938) was an American motion picture executive. Biography Gordon was born in Vilna, Russian Empire (currently Vilnius, Lithuania), March 15, 1872, the son of a medical practitioner. He attended a college at Vilna, taking the rabbinical course, and came to the United States in 1890. After working for a time in a harness shop at Meriden, Connecticut, he went West and with headquarters at Denver, Colorado, established a photograph enlarging business, traveling from town to town by wagon and enlarging pictures as he went. Later he operated a picture slot-machine place at Helena, Montana, and a drug store at Seattle, Washington. In 1902 he returned to Denver where he became part owner of a penny arcade, showing slot-machine pictures. In the following year he returned to New England and with his brother Israel Gordon opened a slot-machine picture business at Worcester, Mass., placing machines in stores, penny arcades and elsewhere. Strand Theatre is a restored vaudeville house located in Uphams Corner in Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts. It is owned by the City of Boston and managed by the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture. History The Strand was built in 1918 as a movie and vaudeville house. It opened on the evening of Armistice Day (November 11, 1918), billed as Dorchester's million-dollar movie palace, with a double feature: Queen of the Sea, starring Annette Kellermann, and Out of a Clear Sky, starring Marguerite Clark, with extra added attraction Miss Emilie Earle, the songstress de luxe. The theater was designed by Funk and Wilcox in Boston and built by McGahey and O'Connor. The theater boasted the first theater organ in New England, which reportedly cost $75,000. Gordon's Olympia Theatre (est. 1910s) in Boston, Massachusetts, was established by Nathan H. Gordon of Olympia Theatres, Inc. Architect Clarence Blackall designed the building at no.658 Washington Street, near Boylston Street in the theatre district. It later became the Pilgrim Theater. The building was demolished in 1996. In late 1974, the Pilgrim Theater was the site of a drunken rant and press conference by House Ways and Means Committee chairman Wilbur Mills at the height of his sex scandal with Fanne Foxe, which prompted his resignation from the committee shortly afterwards.
