Nasser Taghvai
Nasser Taghvai ( fa, ناصر تقوایی, also romanized as Nāser Taghvā'i and Nāser Taqvāyi; born 10 July 1941) is an Iranian film director and screenwriter. Biography Taghvāi was born in Abadan. After early experiences as a story writer, he began filming documentaries in 1967. He made his debut, ''Tranquility in the Presence of Others'', in 1970 and gained the attention of Iranian critics. His concern for the ethnography and atmosphere of southern Iran is notable in his films. Most of his works have been based on novels. '' Captain Khorshid'' is an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's ''To Have and Have Not'', which won the third prize at the 48th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland in 1988. In 1999 he directed a segment of the film ''Tales of Kish'', which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. My Uncle Napoleon
''My Uncle Napoleon'' ( fa, دایی جان ناپلئون, italic=yes, ''Dâ'i jân Nâpel'on'', literal translation: ''Dear Uncle Napoleon'') is a coming of age novel by Iranian author Iraj Pezeshkzad published in Tehran in Persian in 1973. The novel was adapted as a TV series in 1976, directed by Nasser Taghvai. Though the book and the TV series were briefly banned following the Islamic Revolution of 1979 in Iran, it remained popular. It is noted for its lampooning of the common social attitudes and beliefs in Iran during the period of Allied occupation of Iran. The novel has been translated by Dick Davis into English. Plot summary The story takes place at the time of Iran's occupation by the Allied forces during the Second World War. Iranian New Wave
Iranian New Wave refers to a movement in Iranian cinema. It started in 1964 with Hajir Darioush's second film ''Serpent's Skin'', which was based on D.H. Lawrence's ''Lady Chatterley's Lover'' featuring Fakhri Khorvash and Jamshid Mashayekhi. Darioush's two important early social documentaries ''But Problems Arose'' in 1965, dealing with the cultural alienation of the Iranian youth, and ''Face 75'', a critical look at the westernization of the rural culture, which was a prizewinner at the 1965 Berlin Film Festival, also contributed significantly to the establishment of the New Wave. Fajr International Film Festival
Iran's annual Fajr International Film Festival ( fa, جشنواره بینالمللی فیلم فجر), or Fajr Film Festival (little: FIFF; fa, جشنواره فیلم فجر), has been held every February and April in Tehran since 1982. The festival is supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. It takes place on the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The awards are the Iranian equivalent to the American Academy Awards. The festival has been promoted locally and internationally through television, radio and webinars; speakers have come from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The Cartagena Film Festival ( es, Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias), or FICCI, is a film festival held in Cartagena, Colombia, which focuses mainly on the promotion of Colombian television series, Latin American films and short films. The Cartagena Film Festival, which is held every March, is the oldest film festival in Latin America. The Cartagena Film Festival was founded 1959 by Victor Nieto. Nieto remained the director of the film festival for 48 years, his last being in 2008. Nieto died at the age of 92 in November 2008.
