Naseem Shafaie
Naseem Shafaie (born 1952) is a Kashmiri language poet who writes about a variety of topics including the turbulent atmosphere of Kashmir from a woman's perspective. Early life and education Shafaie was born in a middle-class family in Srinagar. She has a post-graduate degree in Kashmiri language and literature from the University of Kashmir and is a teacher of Kashmiri language at a graduate level. Literary career Shafaie has published two poetry collections. ''Derche Machrith'' (Open Windows) was published in 1999. Her second collection ''Na Thsay Na Aks'' (Neither Shadow Nor Reflection, 2009) won the 2011 Sahitya Akademi Award for Kashmiri making Shafaie the first Kashmiri woman to win the prize. ''Na Thsay Na Aks'' was also among the eight winners of the inaugural Tagore Literature Award in 2009. Her poetry has been translated into English, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi and Telugu. Kashmiri Language
Kashmiri () or Koshur (, /kəːʃur/) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by around 7 million Kashmiris of the Kashmir region, primarily in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2020, the Parliament of India passed a bill to make Kashmiri an official language of Jammu and Kashmir along with Dogri, Hindi, Urdu and English. Kashmiri is also among the 22 scheduled languages of India. Kashmiri has split ergativity and the unusual verb-second word order. Geographic distribution and status There are about 6.8 million speakers of Kashmiri and related dialects in Jammu and Kashmir and amongst the Kashmiri diaspora in other states of India. The precise figures from the 2011 census are 6,554,36 for Kashmiri as a "mother tongue" and 6,797,587 for Kashmiri as a "language" (which includes closely related smaller dialects/languages). Sahitya Akademi Award
The Sahitya Akademi Award is a literary honour in India, which the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, annually confers on writers of the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the 22 languages of the 8th Schedule to the Indian constitution as well as in English and Rajasthani language. Established in 1954, the award comprises a plaque and a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000. The award's purpose is to recognise and promote excellence in Indian writing and also acknowledge new trends. The annual process of selecting awardees runs for the preceding twelve months. The plaque awarded by the Sahitya Akademi was designed by the Indian film-maker Satyajit Ray. Prior to this, the plaque occasionally was made of marble, but this practice was discontinued because of the excessive weight. Tagore Award
The Tagore Award is an award given in commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) for cultural harmony. Established in 2011 by Government of India, it is given for outstanding achievement in fostering harmony and universalism and values of cultural harmony especially in conflict or extreme situations through innovative systems/strategies and which have an enduring and transformational impact. This award carries an amount of Rupees One Crore (ten million rupees, convertible to foreign currency), a Citation in a Scroll, a Plaque as well as an exquisite traditional handicraft/handloom item. Kashmiri Poetry
Literature of Kashmir has a long history, the oldest texts having been composed in the Sanskrit language. Early names include Patanjali, the author of the ''Mahābhāṣya'' commentary on Pāṇini's grammar, suggested by some to have been the same to write the Hindu treatise known as the ''Yogasutra'', and Dridhbala, who revised the ''Charaka Samhita'' of ''Ayurveda''. In medieval times, philosophers of Kashmir Shaivism include Vasugupta (c. 800), Utpala (c. 925), Abhinavagupta, Kshemaraja, and Anandavardhana. Mohammad Zahid (poet)
Mohammad Zahid (born 1977) is an Indian poet, translator and editor from Anantnag, Kashmir. He is a recipient of Jibanananda Das Award for his translation of Kashmiri poetry into English. Early life and education Mohammad Zahid was born in 1977 at Anantnag in Kashmir Valley. His father Bashir Ahmad Makhdoomi and mother Badshah Gowher were scholars of English literature and Persian literature, respectively. Zahid had his early education in Anantnag and Srinagar. Later he joined Jammu & Kashmir Bank as an officer. Professional and literary career Despite being a banker by profession, Zahid has devoted his spare time to literature.
