Narrows Commercial Historic District
The Narrows Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic commercial heart of Narrows, Virginia. It is centered at the intersection of Main and Monroe Streets and MacArthur Lane, near the confluence of Wolf Creek and the New River. The area's major development did not begin until after the arrival in 1882 of the railroad, with most of it taking place in the two decades before World War II. Major buildings include the 1927 Norfolk and Western Railroad depot and the 1940 General Macarthur Hotel. The New River is a river which flows through the U.S. states of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia before joining with the Gauley River to form the Kanawha River at the town of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. Norfolk And Western Railroad
The Norfolk and Western Railway , commonly called the N&W, was a US class I railroad, formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982. It was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, for most of its existence. Its motto was "Precision Transportation"; it had a variety of nicknames, including "King Coal" and "British Railway of America". In 1986, N&W merged with Southern Railway to form today’s Norfolk Southern Railway. The N&W was famous for manufacturing its own steam locomotives, which were built at the Roanoke Shops, as well as its own hopper cars.
