Narrow Gauge Railways In Hungary
The former Austria-Hungary empire had a narrow-gauge rail network thousands of kilometres in length, most of it using Bosnian gauge or gauge, constructed between 1870 and 1920. Landlords, mines, agricultural and forest estates established their own branch lines which, as they united into regional networks, increasingly played a role in regional passenger traffic. Following the Treaty of Trianon some railways were cut by the new border, many remained on the territory of Romania, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Due to a lack of intact roads, following World War II in many places narrow-gauge railway was the only reasonable way to get around. In 1968 the Communist government started to implement a policy to dismantle the narrow-gauge network in favour of road traffic. Lillafüred
Lillafüred (Miskolc-Lillafüred) is a town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Hungary. Officially, it is a part of Miskolc, though it is almost 12 kilometres away from the city, in the Bükk Mountains. Lillafüred is a tourist resort. History Count András Bethlen, the minister of agriculture, decided in the 1890s to build a holiday resort near Lake Hámori. Lillafüred Forest Train
The Lillafüred Forest Train is a narrow-gauge tourist railway in Hungary. The railway opened as the Lillafüredi State Forest Railway (Lillafüredi Állami Erdei Vasút or LÁEV) in 1920. It originally carried freight only (mainly wood from the forests of the Bükk Mountains) but a passenger service was introduced in the third year of operation. In 1990, the freight service was withdrawn but the railway continued to carry passengers as a tourist railway. Kismaros (german: Kleinmarosch) is a village in Pest county, Hungary. Location Kismaros is located 45 kilometres north of Budapest on the eastern bank of the Danube river, just above the bend where the river changes course and flows south. Eger
Eger ( , ; ; also known by other alternative names) is the county seat of Heves County, and the second largest city in Northern Hungary (after Miskolc). A city with county rights. Eger is best known for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings, the northernmost Ottoman minaret, dishes and red wines. Felsőtárkány is a municipality in the Eger District of Heves county, Hungary.
