Napoleón Baccino Ponce de León (born Montevideo, 1947) is an Uruguayan writer. He is best known for his historical novel ''Maluco. La Novela de Los Descubridores'', a fictional account of Magellan's circumnavigation of the world. The book won the Premio Casa de las Américas in 1989. The Fraternity Award ( es, Premio Fraternidad) is an honor given annually by the Uruguayan branch of the Jewish organization B'nai B'rith. History The Uruguayan branch of B'nai B'rith created the Fraternity Award in 1982, to promote the arts and to support national artists in the areas of Literature, Plastic Arts, Visual Arts, Dance, Theater, and Music. The Magellan expedition, also known as the Magellan–Elcano expedition, was the first voyage around the world in recorded history. It was a 16th century Spanish expedition initially led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to the Moluccas, which departed from Spain in 1519, and completed in 1522 by Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, after crossing the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, culminating in the first circumnavigation of the world.
