Nantucket Harbor Range Lights
The Nantucket Harbor Range Lights are range lights that were built in 1908 to guide vessels through the narrow channel to Nantucket Harbor. They replaced an older arrangement involving the Nantucket Beacon and the Brant Point Light Brant Point Light is a lighthouse located on Nantucket, Massachusetts, Nantucket Island. The station was established in 1746, automated in 1965, and is still in operation. The current tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places on O ..., which became unusable when the latter was replaced with a new tower. They display red and white vertical striped daymarks, type KRW, one of the twelve combinations used by the Coast Guard. It is not known why the official USCG name of the front light, Nantucket Reef Range Front Light includes the word "reef". Leading Lights
Leading lights (also known as range lights in the United States) are a pair of light beacons used in navigation to indicate a safe passage for vessels entering a shallow or dangerous channel; they may also be used for position fixing. At night, the lights are a form of leading line that can be used for safe navigation. The beacons consist of two lights that are separated in distance and elevation, so that when they are aligned, with one above the other, they provide a bearing. Range lights are often illuminated day and night. In some cases the two beacons are unlighted, in which case they are known as a range in the United States or a transit in the UK. Nantucket Beacon
The Nantucket Beacon formed a range with the Brant Point Light to guide vessels into Nantucket harbor. Operated at various times in the 19th century, it was deactivated sometime after 1870. Brant Point Light
Brant Point Light is a lighthouse located on Nantucket, Massachusetts, Nantucket Island. The station was established in 1746, automated in 1965, and is still in operation. The current tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1987; it has the distinction of being the tenth light on the point, in addition to several Leading lights, range lights. Four of the others burned or blew down, two were condemned, two were unsatisfactory, and the remaining one stands unused. Daymark
A daymark is a navigational aid for sailors and pilots, distinctively marked to maximize its visibility in daylight. The word is also used in a more specific, technical sense to refer to a signboard or daytime identifier that is attached to a day beacon or other aid to navigation. In that sense, a daymark conveys to the mariner during daylight hours the same significance as does the aid's light or reflector at night.
