Freedive career Nanja van den Broek started freediving in 2001 and in her first competition she immediately set two national records, in the disciplines static and dynamic with fins. On 31 May 2014, she was the first Dutch male or female to make a freedive to -100 meters (in the discipline No Limits). On 18 October 2015, she set a new world record in the discipline Variable Weight with a dive to -130 meters. She was the first to break a record of the late Natalia Molchanova. Freediver
Freediving, free-diving, free diving, breath-hold diving, or skin diving is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding until resurfacing rather than the use of breathing apparatus such as scuba gear. Besides the limits of breath-hold, immersion in water and exposure to high ambient pressure also have physiological effects that limit the depths and duration possible in freediving. Examples of freediving activities are traditional fishing techniques, competitive and non-competitive freediving, competitive and non-competitive spearfishing and freediving photography, synchronised swimming, underwater football, underwater rugby, underwater hockey, underwater target shooting and snorkeling. Natalia Molchanova
Natalia Vadimovna Molchanova (russian: Наталья Вадимовна Молчанова; 8 May 1962 – 2 August 2015) was a Russian champion free diver, multiple world record holder, and the former president of the Russian Free Dive Federation. She has been described as "possibly the world’s greatest freediver". Molchanova's son is Russian freediving champion Alexey Molchanov. On 2 August 2015, Molchanova vanished in Formentera while giving a private lesson. Search efforts were abandoned on 5 August and she was presumed dead.
