Nanette Rainone
Nanette Rainone (December 4, 1942 – May 23, 2016) was an American reporter and programmer at the New York radio station WBAI in the 1960s and 1970s. She created some of the first programs on feminism and women’s issues. She worked on the mayoral campaign of Bella Abzug and founded Brooklyn Information & Culture (BRIC). Early life and education Nanette Rainone was born on December 4, 1942, in Queens, New York. She attended Newtown High School in Queens. She earned a degree in English from Queens College in 1965. Brooklyn Information & Culture
BRIC, formerly known as BRIC Arts Media or Brooklyn Information & Culture, is a non-profit arts organization based in Brooklyn, New York founded in 1979 as the "Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn". A presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, it incubates and showcases work by artists and media-makers with programs reaching hundreds of thousands of people each year. Student Peace Union
Student Peace Union (SPU) was a nationwide student organization active on college campuses in the United States from 1959 to 1964. Its national headquarters were located near the campus of the University of Chicago. The SPU was founded by Ken Calkins, who had gained notoriety when his pelvis was fractured when he sat in front of a truck during a pacifist demonstration against nuclear weapons at the first Atlas Missile site 20 miles northwest of Cheyenne, Wyoming. He had returned to Chicago and became educational director for the local American Friends Service Committee. As part of his duties in that position he conducted a number of peace seminars at local Chicago high schools, where he developed a number of contacts with local students. The Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC) was an activist group set up in New York City by Robert Taber in April 1960. History The FPCC's purpose was to provide grassroots support for the Cuban Revolution against attacks by the United States government, once Fidel Castro began openly admitting his commitment to Marxism and began the expropriation and nationalization of Cuban assets belonging to U.S. corporations. The FPCC opposed the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961, the imposition of the United States embargo against Cuba, and was sympathetic to the Cuban view during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Its members were placed under surveillance by the FBI.
