Sololá (department)
__NOTOC__ Sololá is a city in Guatemala. It is the capital of the department of Sololá and the administrative seat of Sololá municipality. It is located close to Lake Atitlan. The name is a Hispanicized form of its pre-Columbian name, one spelling variant of which is Tz'olojya. The urban center has about 14,000 people, but the municipality also includes four village communities — Los Encuentros, El Tablón, San Jorge la Laguna, and Argueta — as well as 59 smaller rural communities. Sololá is situated at 2,114 m altitude on a mountainside overlooking Lake Atitlán, some 600 meters below. It is a highland market center and is the headquarters for the Catholic Bishopric encompassing the Sololá and Chimaltenango Departments. Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán
Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan is a municipality in the Sololá department of Guatemala. It is located at about in altitude in the steep mountains of the Sierra Madre range, descending from the western highlands to the southern coastal plain. The indigenous language is Kʼicheʼ. The town experienced large landslides during hurricane Mitch (1998); a year after this catastrophe, many residents moved to higher ground and founded the village of Nueva Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan, in territory called Chwi Pataan or “above the responsibility/duty,”within the independent township of Nahualá, and with private land plots owned principally by Nahualeños prior to 2005. Nahualá
Nahualá () is a Municipalities of Guatemala, municipality in the Sololá Department, Sololá department of Guatemala. The town is sometimes known as Santa Catalina Nahualá in honor of the town's patron saint, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, but the official name is just "Nahualá". Formerly, the town's name was written Nagualá, and earlier transcriptions of the name in colonial documents include Nauala, Niguala, Niuala, and Navala. Escuintla
Escuintla () is an industrial city in Guatemala, its land extension is 4384 km², and it is nationally known for its sugar agribusiness. Its capital is a minicipality with the same name. Citizens celebrate from December 6 to 9 with a small fair in honor to The Immaculate Conception. In 2002 the city had a population of 86,678. It is located on the border of the central highlands and the Pacific coastal plain.
