Nagato, Yamaguchi
is a city in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on March 31, 1954. As of October 1, 2016, the city has an estimated population of 34,882 and a population density of 97 persons per km². The total area is 357.92 km². Nagato consists of five smaller towns that were absorbed over the past several years. The towns are Fukawa, Senzaki, Yuya, Heki and Misumi (all from Ōtsu District). Nagato also encompasses Omijima Island and the township of Kayoi. The nearby Omijima Island has many pebbled beaches and scuba diving on one of its northern beaches. The island is reached by a large road bridge which connects the Senzaki Peninsula with the southern edge of the island. Nagato Province
, often called , was a province of Japan. It was at the extreme western end of Honshū, in the area that is today Yamaguchi Prefecture. Nagato bordered on Iwami and Suō Provinces. History Although the ancient capital of the province was Shimonoseki, Hagi was the seat of the Chōshū ''han'' (fief or domain) during the Edo period. Nagato was ruled by the Mōri clan before and after the Battle of Sekigahara. Japanese Battleship Nagato
, named for Nagato Province, was a super-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Completed in 1920 as the lead ship of her class, she carried supplies for the survivors of the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923. The ship was modernized in 1934–1936 with improvements to her armor and machinery and a rebuilt superstructure in the pagoda mast style. ''Nagato'' briefly participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and was the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the attack on Pearl Harbor. She covered the withdrawal of the attacking ships and did not participate in the attack itself.
