History Murchison East station opened on 1 September 1890, just over ten years after the railway line from Mangalore to Shepparton opened. The station became a junction in the month that it opened, when the line to Rushworth opened, branching off at the southern ( up) end of the station. That line was later extended to Colbinabbin and Girgarre. In 1987, the Rushworth line closed. A siding, in rail terminology, is a low-speed track section distinct from a running line or through route such as a main line, branch line, or spur. It may connect to through track or to other sidings at either end. Sidings often have lighter rails, meant for lower speed or less heavy traffic, and few, if any, signals. Regional rail, also known as local trains and stopping trains, are passenger rail services that operate between towns and cities. These trains operate with more stops over shorter distances than inter-city rail, but fewer stops and faster service than commuter rail.
