Nackawic High School
Nackawic Senior High School is a high school located in Nackawic, New Brunswick, Canada. Nackawic High receives new students primarily from Nackawic Middle School and Keswick Valley Memorial School, if they do not choose to attend Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton. The school houses the Nackawic Public-School Library, accessible by the public. History The school was finished in October 1967, to replace Southampton Regional High School, the site of which was flooded by the construction of the Mactaquac Dam. Some classes were housed in temporary portable classrooms until 1971, when the Nackawic Junior High School was finished. Originally, the school housed grades 7-12. Later, grades 7-9 were moved to the Junior High. In the 1990s, an addition was built on to accommodate grade 9, which was transferred back from Nackawic Middle School. Nackawic
Nackawic is an unincorporated community in New Brunswick, Canada. It held town status prior to 2023. It is approximately 65 km west of the city of Fredericton on the east bank of the Saint John River. Nackawic, from the Malecite Nelgwaweegek, "straight stream", possibly in reference to how the mouth faces the Saint-John River. History The area was first settled in 1784 by the United Empire Loyalists, primarily through land grants to the families of soldiers who had fought with His Majesty's Regiment of Queen's Rangers during the American Revolutionary War. Previously known as Otis, the development of town began in the late 1960s and was built so those forced to relocate as a result of the Mactaquac Dam being constructed would have a place to reside. Mactaquac Dam
The Mactaquac Dam is an embankment dam used to generate hydroelectricity in Mactaquac, New Brunswick. It dams the waters of the Saint John River and is operated by NB Power with a capacity to generate 670 megawatts of electricity from 6 turbines; this represents 20 percent of New Brunswick's power demand. Location Formally called the Mactaquac Generating Station, the dam and power house are located approximately upstream from the city of Fredericton. The dam is an embankment dam consisting of a rock-fill structure sealed by clay. It combines with two concrete spill-ways to form an arch across a narrow section of the river between the communities of Kingsclear on the west bank, and Keswick Ridge on the east bank. David Nathan Alward (born December 2, 1959) is a Canadian politician, who served as the 32nd premier of New Brunswick, 2010 to 2014. A portable classroom (also known as a demountable or relocatable classroom, portables, bungalows), is a type of portable building installed at a school to temporarily and quickly provide additional classroom space where there is a shortage of capacity.
