Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a Gastropoda, gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the Aperture (mollusc), aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group. Shell layers The gastropod shell has three major layers secreted by the Mantle (mollusc), mantle. The calcareous central layer, tracum, is typically made of calcium carbonate precipitated into an organic matrix known as c ...

Acroreia Baylei
Acroreia or Akroreia ( grc, Ἀκρώρεια) was a mountainous district of ancient Elis on the borders of Arcadia, in which the rivers Peneius and Ladon take their rise. The inhabitants of the district were called Acrocreii (Ἀκρωρεῖοι), and their towns appear to have been Thraustus, Alium, Opus, and Eupagium, to which Lasion may be added. The name is used in opposition to Κοίλη or Hollow Elis. Diodorus Siculus writes that the Spartans, under command of Pausanias of Sparta, marched against Elis with 4,000 men in 402 BCE, and that the towns of Opus, Alium, Eupagium, Thraustus, and Lasion were subdued. Xenophon mentions an Arcadian raid into Elis and took several towns of Acroreia around 365 BCE. Stephanus of Byzantium, who is followed by many modern writers, makes Acrocreii a town, and places it in Triphylia Triphylia ( el, Τριφυλία, ''Trifylia'', "the country of the three tribes") was an area of the ancient Peloponnese. Strabo and Pausanias both ...

Harold John Finlay
Harold John Finlay (22 March 1901 – 7 April 1951) was a New Zealand palaeontologist and conchologist. Biography Finlay was born in Comilla, India (now Bangladesh), on 22 March 1901. He was left a paraplegic after contracting poliomyelitis at the age of four, but waas able to participate in field excursions. He graduated from the University of Otago with B.Sc. and M.Sc. He received the Hamilton Memorial Prize of the New Zealand Institute in 1926 and a D.Sc. in 1927. His main research interest was marine and non-marine malacofauna of New Zealand, both recent and fossil. He also specialised on fossil Foraminifera. After a long period of unemployment, Finlay was appointed to the Geological Survey of New Zealand in 1937, and in the same year he married Jean Dorothy Waterson Gillies. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 1939, and was awarded the scoiety's Hector Memorial Medal in 1941. Nacella Macquariensis
''Nacella macquariensis'' is a species of true limpet, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Nacellidae. It is found on the lower foreshore and in the shallow sub-littoral zone of certain islands in the southern Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean. Taxonomy ''Nacella macquariensis'' was named for Macquarie Island, the type location from which it was first described by Finlay in 1927. At that time there was confusion as to the correct nomenclature of the limpets found on the different sub-Arctic islands in the southern Indian Ocean. The limpet ''Nacella delesserti'' had been described by Hedley in 1916 and it was unclear whether this, and ''Nacella fuegiensis'' (Reeve, 1855) and ''Nacella illuminata'' (Gould, 1846) were in fact different species. Finlay determined that the following names should be accepted and the others discontinued: *''Nacella macquariensis'' – Macquarie Island *''Nacella strigilis'' (H. & J., 1841) – Auckland Island *''Nacella terroris'' (Filh ...
