Naas C.B.S.
Naas C.B.S. ( ga, Méanscoil Iognáid Rís Nás na Riogh) is a Christian Brothers secondary school in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland. History Méanscoil Iognáid Rís is a voluntary secondary school under the trusteeship of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust (E.R.S.T). The school, named after the founder of the order Edmund Rice, opened its doors in September 1871. The Moat Hall as it is now known was both monastery and school for the Brothers until 1903, when the monastery on Friary Road was built. For over seventy years both the primary and secondary schools were housed in the hall. In 1954 St. Corban's B.N.S was built and four years later the secondary school moved to its present site on St. Corban's Lane. A European Commissioner is a member of the 27-member European Commission. Each member within the Commission holds a specific portfolio. The commission is led by the President of the European Commission. In simple terms they are the equivalent of government ministers. Charles McCreevy (born 30 September 1949) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services from 2004 to 2010, Minister for Finance from 1997 to 2004, Minister for Tourism and Trade from 1993 to 1994 and Minister for Social Welfare from 1992 to 1993. Numbersixvalverde (born 1996) is an Irish race horse who won both the 2005 Irish Grand National and 2006 Aintree Grand National steeplechase, beating Hedgehunter by six lengths with Niall Madden in the saddle. Niall "Slippers" Madden (born 11 November 1985) is a retired Irish jockey who rode the racehorse Numbersixvalverde to win the 2006 Grand National steeplechase at Aintree Racecourse. Madden's nickname is "Slippers", as a comparison with his father Niall Madden, also a jockey, whose nickname was "Boots". Pádraig Nolan (born 1964) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer and manager, who played for the Kildare county team at minor, under-21 and senior level in the late 1980s. He later managed two county teams: Offaly and Kildare. Early life Nolan is originally from in Kilcock in County Kildare, Ireland. As of his appointment as Kildare manager in 2002, Nolan taught and coached at Naas C.B.S. Playing career Nolan represented Kildare at the end of the 1980s, a career which included one historic achievement. He was on the Kildare team which lost to Kilkenny in the O'Byrne Cup. Naas ( ; ga, Nás na Ríogh or ) is the county town of County Kildare in Ireland. In 2016, it had a population of 21,393, making it the second largest town in County Kildare after Newbridge. Edmund Ignatius Rice ( ga, Éamonn Iognáid Rís; 1 June 1762 – 29 August 1844) was a Catholic missionary and educationalist. He was the founder of two religious institutes of religious brothers: the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers. Rice was born in Ireland at a time when Catholics faced oppression under Penal Laws enforced by the British authorities, though reforms began in 1778 when he was a teenager. The Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST) is a Catholic school network with responsibility for almost 100 schools in the Republic of Ireland. The trust is named after Edmund Ignatius Rice the founder of the Irish Christian Brothers who originally established and maintained the schools.
