"First Flight" is the fiftieth episode of the American science fiction television series '' Star Trek: Enterprise'', the twenty-fourth episode of the second season. It first aired on May 14, 2003, on UPN. It was written by John Shiban and Chris Black, and was directed by '' Star Trek: The Next Generation'' actor LeVar Burton ( Geordi La Forge). Set in the 22nd century, the series follows the adventures of the first Starfleet starship '' Enterprise'', registration NX-01. In this episode, after Captain Jonathan Archer ( Scott Bakula) is informed of the death of his former colleague, A.G. Robinson (Keith Carradine), he relates the story of breaking the warp 2.5 barrier to T'Pol ( Jolene Blalock) while investigating a dark matter nebula. Jonathan Archer
Jonathan Archer is a fictional character in the ''Star Trek'' franchise. He is the protagonist of the television series ''Star Trek: Enterprise'', where he is portrayed by Scott Bakula. Archer is the commanding officer of the first starship ''Enterprise'' (NX-01) from 2151 to 2161. Archer also played a major role in the formation of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, and was later President of the United Federation of Planets from 2184 to 2192. According to a computer display in the episode "In a Mirror, Darkly", historian John Gill considered Archer "the greatest explorer of the 22nd century." The technology in ''Star Trek'' has borrowed many ideas from the scientific world. Episodes often contain technologies named after real-world scientific phenomena, such as tachyon beams, baryon sweeps, quantum slipstream drives, and photon torpedoes. Enterprise (NX-01)
''Enterprise NX-01'' is a fictional spaceship that appears in the American science fiction television series ''Star Trek: Enterprise''. It had the in-universe registration of NX-01 and appeared earlier in the franchise timeline than any other Starfleet ship named ''Enterprise''. The ship is first seen in the pilot episode " Broken Bow" and was seen throughout the series undergoing various upgrades. Its missions included an initial period of deep space exploration and a mission into the Delphic Expanse following the Xindi attack on Earth; it was also instrumental in the formation of the United Federation of Planets with the Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites. Scott Bakula
Scott Stewart Bakula (; born October 9, 1954) is an American actor. Shuttlecraft (Star Trek)
Shuttlecraft are fictional vehicles in the '' Star Trek'' science fiction franchise built for short trips in space, such as between a planetary surface and orbit. Also referred to as shuttles, their introduction preceded the development of the Space Shuttle. Before '' Star Trek'', science fiction productions from ''Forbidden Planet'' to ''Rocky Jones, Space Ranger'' assumed that a long-range starship would land on planets. Gene Roddenberry's original premise stated that the starship ''Enterprise'' rarely lands. Given the special effects complexity of landing a giant starship each week, "rarely" was quickly changed to "never". Dated March 1964, the premise mentions a "small shuttle rocket".
