NSW Wallaby
NSW Wallaby was a steam locomotive seeing service in New South Wales. History Wallaby was built for the Hoskin Lithgow Steel Works to serve the No. 2 blast furnace plant in 1913. The locomotive was transferred to Port Kembla by Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. (AIS) in 1932. In 1933 Wallaby spent a period at South Kembla Colliery before returning to AIS. Demise and Preservation Withdrawn from service at Port Kembla on 19 November 1962 "Wallaby" was placed on static display 5 June 1963. Hawthorn Leslie And Company
R. & W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Limited, usually referred to as Hawthorn Leslie, was a shipbuilder and locomotive manufacturer. The company was founded on Tyneside in 1886 and ceased building ships in 1982. History The company was formed by the merger of the shipbuilder A. Leslie and Company in Hebburn with the locomotive works of R and W Hawthorn at St. Peter's in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1886. The company displaced its locomotive manufacturing interests in 1937 to Robert Stephenson and Company, which became ''Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns Ltd.'' Perhaps the most famous ship built by the Company was HMS ''Kelly'', launched in 1938 and commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten. In 1954, the shipbuilding and marine engine activities were put into separate subsidiaries, Hawthorn Leslie (Shipbuilders) Ltd. and Hawthorn Leslie (Engineers) Ltd. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents one of the simplest possible types, that with two axles and four coupled wheels, all of which are driven. The wheels on the earliest four-coupled locomotives were connected by a single gear wheel, but from 1825 the wheels were usually connected with coupling rods to form a single driven set. The notation 0-4-0T indicates a tank locomotive of this wheel arrangement on which its water and fuel is carried on board the engine itself, rather than in an attached tender. In Britain, the Whyte notation of wheel arrangement was also often used for the classification of electric and diesel-electric locomotives with side-rod-coupled driving wheels. Under the UIC classification used in Europe and, in more recent years, in simplified form in the United States, a 0-4-0 is classified as B (German and Italian) if the axles are connected by side rods or gearing and 020 (French), independent of axle motoring. The Illawarra Light Railway Museum operates a mainline narrow gauge light railway, a miniature gauge railway, and a museum located near Albion Park Rail near Wollongong, south of Sydney History The Illawarra Light Railway Museum Society Ltd. was started in 1972 with railway operations commencing in 1974 dedicated to preserving Light Railway history & Illawarra industrial history. In 2007 the society obtained federal funding for the construction of the Ken McCarthy Museum Building, which was officially opened in December 2007.
