NSW Bookstall Company
NSW Bookstall Company was a Sydney company which operated a chain of newsagencies throughout New South Wales. It was notable as a publisher of inexpensive paperback books which were written, illustrated, published and printed in Australia, and sold to commuters at bookstalls in railway stations and elsewhere in New South Wales. History The company was founded as the Sydney Bookstall Company by Henry Lloyd (ca.1847 – 24 September 1897) of "Linden Hall", Annandale, New South Wales around 1880 as a newsagent. Its first foray into publishing may have been racebooks ( form guides or programmes) for the Hawkesbury Race Club around 1886. A. C. Rowlandson (15 June 1865 – 15 June 1922) joined as a tram ticket seller in 1883 and built a strong interest in the business, which he bought from Henry Lloyd's widow. Norman Lindsay
Norman Alfred William Lindsay (22 February 1879 – 21 November 1969) was an Australian artist, etcher, sculptor, writer, art critic, novelist, cartoonist and amateur boxer. One of the most prolific and popular Australian artists of his generation, Lindsay attracted both acclaim and controversy for his works, many of which infused the Australian landscape with erotic pagan elements and were deemed by his critics to be "anti-Christian, anti-social and degenerate". A vocal nationalist, he became a regular artist for '' The Bulletin'' at the height of its cultural influence, and advanced staunchly anti-modernist views as a leading writer on Australian art. Harry Zephaniah Johnson (6 July 1945 – 3 April 2013), known by the stage name Harry J, was a Jamaican reggae record producer. Alf Vincent
Alfred James Vincent (9 February 1874 – 6 December 1915) was an Australian cartoonist born in Launceston, Tasmania. Alf Vincent contributed work to the ''Melbourne Punch'' from 1895, in 1896 succeeding Tom Carrington as feature artist. After many years of submitting work to the ''Sydney Bulletin'', he joined their staff in 1898, as a replacement for Tom Durkin and remained there until 1915. He also contributed to ''The Bulletin''s sister publication, '' Lone Hand''. His work may be mistaken for that of his idol Phil May (1864–1903), a fact that was noted by several critics, including A. G. Stephens and Lionel Lindsay. He was a member of the Melbourne Savage Club from 1900 to 1915 and designed the club emblem. Martin Stainforth
Martin Frank Stainforth (14 August 1866 – 22 April 1957) was a British-born artist best known for his portraits of Thoroughbred racehorses he painted in England and while living in Australia and the United States. Biography Born at Martley, Worcestershire, Stainforth began his artistic career as a traditional artist doing religious portraits and wood engravings in the vein of the Italian Old Masters. The quality of his work brought invitations to exhibit at the Royal Academy as well as at venues in Berlin, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; and Paris, France. At the beginning of the 20th century, he began working as a magazine illustrator but a visit to North Queensland, Australia in 1908 led to his settling there and developing his skills as a painter of animals and especially equine portraiture. Percy Spence
Percy Frederick Seaton Spence (14 December 1868 – 3 August 1933) was an Australian artist. Spence was born in Sydney, seventh child of English parents Francis Spence, civil servant, and his wife Hannah, ''née'' Turnbull. Spence spent his youth in Fiji where his father held a government position. Spence became an illustrator to the Sydney ''Daily Telegraph'', ''Illustrated Sydney News'' and '' The Bulletin'' and also exhibited at the Royal Art Society. In 1893 Spence made two drawings of Robert Louis Stevenson in Sydney; one is now in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Sydney Ure Smith
Sydney George Ure Smith OBE (9 January 188711 October 1949) was an Australian arts publisher, artist and promoter who "did more than any other Australian to publicize Australian art at home and overseas". Unlike most of his contemporaries, he seldom submitted his own art work for publication. He published some of his own work in limited edition books such as ''Old Sydney'' (1911) and ''Old Colonial By-Ways'' (1928), prompted by his passion for preserving historic buildings. Charles Nuttall
Charles Nuttall (born James Charles Nuttall; 6 September 1872 – 28 November 1934) was an Australian artist noted for his illustrations. Nuttall, son of James Charles Nuttall, was born at Fitzroy, Victoria. He received his art training at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, under Frederick McCubbin and contributed drawings to the ''Bulletin'', ''Life'', and other journals. In 1902 he completed a large monochrome painting, "Opening the First Commonwealth Parliament". The painting is in the Parliament House Art Collection in Canberra. A series of portrait sketches of well-known Australians from studies made for this picture was published in 1902, under the title, ''Representative Australians''. Claude Marquet
Claude Arthur Marquet (1869–1920) was an Australian political cartoonist, noted for his unique illustrative style and radical political views. Life Marquet was born in 1869 in Moonta, South Australia, the son of a French workman painter. The family later moved to the larger town of Wallaroo, South Australia, and the young Marquet attended Taplin's Grammar School there. After school, he initially worked as a miner, before obtaining work as a printer's compositor. In that role he became skilled in process engraving. Marquet married Ann Donnell at St Mary's Church in Wallaroo in June 1891, by which time he was already an accomplished black-and-white artist. In 1897, he obtained his first work as an artist, employed as cartoonist for ''Quiz'', a weekly magazine published in Adelaide. Sir David Alexander Cecil Low (7 April 1891 – 19 September 1963) was a New Zealand political cartoonist and caricaturist who lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years. Low was a self-taught cartoonist. Born in New Zealand, he worked in his native country before migrating to Sydney in 1911, and ultimately to London (1919), where he made his career and earned fame for his Colonel Blimp depictions and his satirising of the personalities and policies of German dictator Adolf Hitler, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and other leaders of his times.
