NSCAD University, also known as the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design or NSCAD, is a public art university in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The university is a co-educational institution that offers bachelor's and master's degrees. The university also provides continuing education services through its School of Extended Studies. The institution was founded by Anna Leonowens in 1887 as the Victoria School of Art and Design. The school was later renamed the Nova Scotia College of Art in 1925. Elizabeth Styring Nutt
Elizabeth Styring Nutt (1870 – 1946), was an artist and educator, known for her leadership of the Nova Scotia College of Art in Halifax. Biography Elizabeth Styring Nutt was born on the Isle of Man in 1870. Following the death of her father she moved to Sheffield. Nutt attended the Sheffield School of Art, Newlyn School of Art, and the Sorbonne. In 1914 she received her Masters of Arts at the University of Sheffield. Nutt began her teaching career in Sheffield at the Firs Hill Branch Art School, then the Sheffield School of Art and the Sheffield Training College for Teachers. In 1919 Nutt accepted Arthur Lismer's offer to succeed him as the Principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design. In 1925 Nutt changed the name of the school to the ''Nova Scotia College of Art''. She remained at the Nova Scotia College of Art until 1943. An art school is an educational institution with a primary focus on the visual arts, including fine art – especially illustration, painting, photography, sculpture, and graphic design. Garry Kennedy
Garry Neill Kennedy, (6 November 1935 – 8 August 2021) was a Canadian conceptual artist and educator from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the mid-1970s, he created works that investigated the processes and materials of painting. In the first decade of the 2000s, he expanded his work to investigate art and its social, institutional, and political framework. Life Kennedy was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. He studied at the Ontario College of Art (1960) and then earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University at Buffalo. He completed his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Ohio in 1965. Kennedy went on to teach in, and head, the fine art department of Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. In 1967, at the age of 32, he was appointed president of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the youngest ever to serve in that position. Halifax Seaport
The Halifax Seaport is a Canadian commercial development located on the Halifax, Nova Scotia waterfront, at the southern end of the Halifax Boardwalk. It is a re-use of former shipping warehouses. The intent of the multi-year project is to create a thriving new arts and culture district in the city. Notable tenants include NSCAD University, the new Halifax Farmers' Market, a cruise ship terminal, the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, and the Cunard Centre, a multi-purpose events venue. Eric Fischl
Eric Fischl (born March 9, 1948) is an American painter, sculptor, printmaker, draughtsman and educator. He is known for his paintings depicting American suburbia from the 1970s and 1980s. Life Fischl was born in New York City and grew up on suburban Long Island; his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1967. His art education began at Phoenix College for two years, followed with studying at Arizona State University. Followed by studying at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, where he received a B.F.A. in 1972. He then moved to Chicago, taking a job as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Between 1974 and 1978 he taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Henry Mortikar Rosenberg
Henry M. Rosenberg (known also as Henry Mortikar Rosenberg) (February28, 1858 December24, 1947) was a painter whose style varied from realism to tonalism, symbolism and impressionism, as well as a printmaker and educator. He was Principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design (now known as NSCAD) from 1898 to 1910. Writers on the history of art in Nova Scotia call him the "grand old man of Nova Scotian art". Arthur Lismer
Arthur Lismer, LL. D. (27 June 1885 – 23 March 1969) was an English-Canadian painter, member of the Group of Seven and educator. He is known primarily as a landscape painter and for his paintings of ships in dazzle camouflage. Early life Lismer was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, the son of Harriet and Edward Lismer, a draper's buyer. At age thirteen, he apprenticed at a photo-engraving company. He was awarded a scholarship, and used this time to take evening classes at the Sheffield School of Art from 1898 until 1905. In 1905, he moved to Antwerp, Belgium, where he studied art at the Academie Royale. Lismer immigrated to Canada in 1911, settled in Toronto, Ontario, and took a job with Grip Ltd. Association Of Independent Colleges Of Art And Design
The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) is a non-profit consortium of 36 art and design schools in the United States and Canada. All AICAD member institutions have a curriculum with full liberal arts and sciences requirements complementing studio work, and all are accredited to grant Bachelor of Fine Arts and/or Master of Fine Arts degrees. Vito Acconci
