NM Route 68
New Mexico State Road 68 (NM 68) is a state highway in northern New Mexico, in the Southwestern United States. NM 68 is known as the "River Road to Taos", as its route follows the Rio Grande. A parallel route to the east is NM 76, which is called the "High Road to Taos". Route description NM 68 begins in the south in Española at the road's junction with U.S. Route 285 and U.S. Route 84 which run concurrently at that point. The road then runs northeast through Alcalde, Velarde, Embudo, and Ranchos de Taos, where it meets the north end of New Mexico State Road 518, before reaching its northern terminus at U.S. Route 64 in Taos. Between Española and Velarde, State Road 68 is a four-lane divided highway with a speed limit (with a limit as it nears Velarde and limit through Velarde); between Velarde and Taos, Highway 68 is a two-lane highway with very few passing lanes. State Road 518 (NM 518) is a state highway in northern New Mexico. NM 518 begins as a continuation of 7th Street at Mills Avenue near Interstate 25 (I-25) in Las Vegas. It proceeds north to La Cueva where the road turns northwest at its junction with NM 442. The road continues northwest through Mora and eventually ends in Ranchos de Taos at its northern terminus at NM 68. The segment of NM 518 between Mora and Ranchos de Taos passes through the rugged terrain of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and provides access to Carson National Forest where camping, fishing, skiing, and other recreational opportunities are available. Embudo, New Mexico
Embudo (also Embudo Station) is an unincorporated community in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. It is on New Mexico State Road 68. The Embudo Station is located south of the intersection of New Mexico State Road 75, near where the Embudo Creek (Rio Embudo) flows into the Rio Grande. Etymology The name "Embudo", meaning "funnel" in Spanish, was given to the area by early Spanish settlers because the spot where the Rio Embudo flowed between two distinctive cone shaped hills reminded them of a funnel. Embudo was founded in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad opened a station (depot) there on its Chili Line. The station was named after the village San Antonio de Embudo, located two miles up the Embudo Creek, and until 1902 the communities shared a post office and were known jointly as Embudo. Velarde is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 502 at the time of the 2010 census. Velarde is located on New Mexico State Road 68, in the Rio Grande Rift, at the point where the road enters the Rio Grande Gorge. In 1750, Juan Matias Velarde settled Velarde, (2012 New Mexico Blue Book) at the time named La Joya after his Spanish-born ancestor, Juan Antonio Pérez Velarde, who settled near El Paso del Río del Norte (present Ciudad Juárez, Mexico) in 1725.
