NHRA Summernationals
The NHRA Summernationals were an annual drag racing event run by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The first annual event was held in July 1970, at York U.S. 30 Dragway near York, Pennsylvania. Subsequent events were held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, outside Englishtown, New Jersey. After Old Bridge Township Raceway Park ceased all drag racing operations in 2018, the event was moved to Virginia Motorsports Park, just outside Petersburg, Virginia, and the Summernationals endedreplaced by the Virginia NHRA Nationals. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summernationals is scheduled to be held at the Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. "Dyno Don" Nicholson turned in Ford's first Pro Stock (PS) win in his Maverick at the 1971 Summernationals. "Dandy Dick" Landy made his second, and last, final round appearance at the 1972 event, losing to Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. Drag Racing
Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles or motorcycles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance, most commonly , with a shorter, distance becoming increasingly popular, as it has become the standard for Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars, where some major bracket races and other sanctioning bodies have adopted it as the standard. Ed McCulloch
Ed McCulloch, nicknamed "The Ace", is an American dragster and funny car driver. History McCulloch grew up in Oregon., motorsport.com (retrieved November 11, 2022) McCulloch started racing in a Chevrolet-powered Top Fuel dragster, which he built with his brother, Dan, in 1964. The car ran well, but in only his second race, at Woodburn Dragstrip, McCulloch failed to lift off the throttle and hit the mount for the timing light; the car flipped, and McCulloch refused to drive again. It did not last. He partnered with Jim Albrich in building another car, and they hired a driver, who they could not afford to pay, so McCulloch took the seat. He proved his skill by being named #1 on ''Drag News'' Mr. Eliminator list on 13 June 1965, after defeating "Sneaky Pete" Robinson at Woodburn. The Ford Fairmont is a model line of compact cars that was manufactured by Ford from the 1978 to 1983 model years. The successor of the Ford Maverick, the Fairmont marked the third generation of compact sedans sold by Ford in North America and the first design no longer based on the Ford Falcon. Bob Glidden
Bob Glidden (August 18, 1944 – December 17, 2017) was an American drag racer. He was retired from Pro Stock racing in 1997 and returned in 2010. Glidden retired as the driver with the most wins in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) history at that time — a feat recently topped by 16-time Funny Car champion John Force — and he was the third-most successful drag racer of the professional class drivers — sixth when counting sportsman national event winners — at the time of his death. The 1978 NHRA Summernationals (commonly known as the Summernats) were a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing event, held at Englishtown, New Jersey, on 16 July. In vehicle acrobatics, a wheelie, or wheelstand, is a vehicle maneuver in which the front wheel or wheels come off the ground due to sufficient torque being applied to the rear wheel or wheels, or rider motion relative to the vehicle. Wheelies are usually associated with bicycles and motorcycles, but can be done with other vehicles such as cars, especially in drag racing and tractor pulling. Funny Car
Funny Car is a type of drag racing vehicle and a specific racing class in organized drag racing. Funny cars are characterized by having tilt-up fiberglass or carbon fiber automotive bodies over a custom-fabricated chassis, giving them an appearance vaguely approximating manufacturers' showroom models. They also have the engine placed in front of the driver, as opposed to dragsters, which place it behind the driver. Funny car bodies typically reflect the models of newly available cars in the time period that the funny car was built. Chevrolet Vega
The Chevrolet Vega is a subcompact automobile that was manufactured and marketed by GM's Chevrolet subdivision from 1970 to 1977. Available in two-door hatchback, notchback, wagon, and sedan delivery body styles, all models were powered by an inline four-cylinder engine with a lightweight, aluminum alloy cylinder block. The Vega first went on sale in Chevrolet dealerships on September 10, 1970. Variants included the Cosworth Vega, a short-lived limited-production performance model, introduced in the spring of 1975. Jim Liberman
Russell James Liberman (September 12, 1945 – September 9, 1977) was an American funny car drag racer, nicknamed "Jungle Jim." In 2001, he was named #17 on the list of the Top 50 NHRA drivers of all time. Liberman was known for driving backwards at after doing his burnout. Liberman was a flamboyant showman who primarily toured the United States at drag racing match race events. During his career, he averaged an estimated 100 events per year during the 1970s. He refused to lift off the gas when a run was completely out of shape. He was regarded by many as the "greatest showman the drag strip has ever experienced."
