North Carolina Highway 400 (NC 400) is the shortest primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is long and is entirely in Dare County and the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island. The route traverses from its western terminus at US 64 to the Elizabeth II vessel (State Historic Site) docked on Ice Plant Island, located in Shallowbag Bay. Unlike other state routes, all of the NC 400 markers have brown recreational backgrounds. The route is split among two one-way streets: eastbound and westbound. Manteo () is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States, located on Roanoke Island. The population was 1,602 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Dare County. Geography Manteo is located at (35.904595, -75.669385), on the north central area of Roanoke Island. It is located off the exit at the South 16 mile post on US Hwy 158 at Whalebone Junction, the junction of NC Highways 158, 64, and 12, known as the Beach Road. Roanoke Island Festival Park
Roanoke Island Festival Park is a North Carolina state historic site located at the end of NC 400 in Manteo, North Carolina on Roanoke Island. The park includes a recreated 16th-century sailing ship, living history demonstrators, a museum, and a variety of performing and visual arts. Admission includes the main attractions and is valid for two days. Dare County, North Carolina
Dare County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,915. Its county seat is Manteo. Dare County is named after Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Americas to English parents, who was born within the county's current borders. Founded in 1870 from parts of Tyrrell, Currituck and Hyde counties, it consists of a large segment of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, along with Roanoke Island and a peninsula of land attached to the mainland. Most of the county consists of a string of resort communities along the Outer Banks. While lightly populated by year-round residents, the population swells during the summer with vacationers.
