The 1997 NCAA basketball tournament was the 73rd season in the Philippine National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The season opened on August 2, 1997 at the Araneta Coliseum and ended on October 6, 1997 with the San Sebastian Stags winning their fifth straight championship in the Seniors division. San Sebastian College – Recoletos
San Sebastian College – Recoletos (SSC-R), commonly known by its nickname Bastê, is a private Catholic coeducational basic and higher education institution run by the Order of Augustinian Recollects in Manila, Metro Manila Philippines. It is one of the six schools owned and operated by the Order of Augustinian Recollects in the Philippines. It was founded by the Augustinian Recollects in March 1941. SSC-R, situated in the heart of Manila, in F. R. Hidalgo Street, Quiapo, was named after Roman centurion turned martyr Saint Sebastian. The College had a humble beginning. Its first functional lone building was an old convent: a two-storey Hispanic edifice made of stone and wood with capiz shell windows. Rizal Memorial Coliseum
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum is an indoor arena in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, Philippines. Its capacity is 6,100. History The Rizal Memorial Coliseum within the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was built on the former site of Manila Carnival Grounds in 1934 as a tennis stadium named "Rizal Memorial Tennis Stadium", but was later renamed “Rizal Memorial Coliseum” at an unknown time. The San Sebastian Golden Stags (also known as SSC-R Stags) are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) basketball team of the San Sebastian College – Recoletos. Their 5 consecutive NCAA seniors basketball championships was the longest streak in the NCAA. The other senior varsity teams may also be referred to as the Stags. Rommel Adducul (born April 21, 1976) is a Filipino former professional basketball player who currently serves as an assistant coach for the Adamson Soaring Falcons of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, UAAP. Career In college, Adducul, a three-time Most Valuable Player, led the San Sebastian Stags to five consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines), NCAA basketball championships from 1993 to 1997. He won the NCAA Seniors Most valuable Player (MVP) back-to-back from 1996 and 1997. At the same time, he was a star in the Philippine Basketball League playing for the defunct Chowking Food Masters, his UAAP counterpart at that time and later Arch-rival was Danny Ildefonso.
