The National Basketball League Most Improved Player is an annual National Basketball League (NBL) award given since the 1988 NBL season The 1988 NBL season was the tenth season of competition since its establishment in 1979. The award is designed to honour an up-and-coming player who has made a dramatic improvement from the previous season or seasons. At the season's end, each club nominates one player for the award with the head coach, one assistant coach and the team captain then voting in a 3-2-1 format (3 votes being indicative of the most deserving). Voters are not allowed to vote for players from their own team. Ben Pepper
Ben Pepper (born 15 July 1975) is a retired Australian basketball player, who played twelve seasons in the National Basketball League. Professional career Ben Pepper, a center began his pro career in the NBL with the Newcastle Falcons in the 1996 NBL season. After an impressive debut season he would go on to win the NBL's Most Improved Player and the NBL's Sixth Man of the Year awards in 1997. Pepper then decided to try his luck with the NBA and entered into the 1997 NBA draft. He was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 56th overall pick, one of four Australians drafted that year. Pepper was one of three 7-foot-tall Australian centers selected in the 1997 draft, the others being Chris Anstey and Paul Rogers. A fourth Australian, C. J. Bruton, was also selected in the draft. The South East Melbourne Magic was an Australian basketball team based in Melbourne. The Magic competed in the National Basketball League (NBL) between 1992 and 1998, and played their home games at Rod Laver Arena. In their seven seasons, the Magic contested four NBL Grand Finals and won two championships, their first coming in their debut season and their second coming in 1996. Chris Anstey
Christopher John Anstey (born 1 January 1975) is an Australian former professional basketball player. His career included stints in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Russia and Spain. Anstey was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round (18th pick overall) of the 1997 NBA draft. He also played for the Melbourne Tigers, South East Melbourne Magic and Victoria Titans in the NBL. He retired at the end of the 2009–10 season while with the Tigers and later became the team's head coach in 2012. Newcastle Falcons (basketball)
The Newcastle Falcons are a defunct basketball team that competed in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). Based in Newcastle, New South Wales, the team played in the NBL's inaugural season in 1979 but left the league in the late 1990s after new owners based in Albury couldn't resolve the club's ongoing financial problems. History The Falcons hold a special place in the history of the NBL with the club largely responsible for the formation of the league which also saw them organise the first season in 1979. The other clubs had to pay a fee of around AU$300 to the Falcons to participate in that first season and the city of Newcastle is regarded as the birthplace of the NBL. The club's original colours were green and white, being the city's colours, but the club soon changed to black and red, and to red and blue, after the Newcastle Knights' admission to the New South Wales Rugby League in 1988.
