N.Y., N.Y. (film)
''N.Y., N.Y.'' (subtitled ''A Day in New York'') is a 1957 film by director Francis Thompson. Plot The film is a collection of scenes from New York City recorded through special lenses, prisms and mirrors giving it a Cubist-Dadaist look. Production Eight years in the making, Thompson shot the images with a Kodak Cine-Special. The film's original negatives sat under the director's bed for nearly thirty years. Reception and legacy ''N.Y., N.Y.'' is mentioned in Aldous Huxley's essay '' Heaven and Hell'': And then there is what may be called the Distorted Documentary a new form of visionary art, admirably exemplified by Mr. Francis Thompson's film, ''NY, NY''. Francis Thompson (film Director)
E. Francis Thompson (January 3, 1908 – December 26, 2003) was an influential American film director, producer, and writer. Thompson was born Ebenezer Francis Thompson on January 3, 1908, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and commenced his career as a painter and art teacher before he directed his first film ''Evolution of a Skyscraper''. He is best known for the films, '' N.Y., N.Y.'' (1957), ''To Be Alive!'' (1964), and '' City Out of Wilderness'' (1974) and is credited with making the first IMAX film, '' To Fly'' (1976). Thompson's style can most accurately be described as ciné-poème. In many of his films, Thompson employs a variety of kaleidoscopic lenses, distorting devices, and secretive techniques, turning his work into more of an abstract art installation than feature film. Gene Forrell (1915–2005) was an American composer and conductor. Forrell was born Eugene Finkelhor in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, where he attended Allderdice High School and Duquesne University. He left Duquesne for New York City and a scholarship from the Dalcroze School. As a composer and orchestral conductor he worked in theater, dance, and television. He wrote the soundtrack to ''N.Y., N.Y. — A Day in New York'', 1957, filmed by Francis Thompson. According to IMDB.com, "The soundtrack is light, breezy, and staccato."
