Its music and poetry are combined with a variety of instruments, rhythms, pauses, and tempos. Hát chầu văn originated in the 16th century and spread quickly. Four Palaces (Tiếng Việt: ; Chữ Hán: ) is a major denomination of the Mother Goddess religion, an indigenous polytheistic religion in Vietnam. This branch is popular in the North of Vietnam and has a profound association with the worship of Đức Thánh Trần. Its name literally means "Four Palaces" as its deities are believed to reside in four palaces, each of which serves as a ministry governing one realm of the universe. The culture of Vietnam (Vietnamese: Văn hoá Việt Nam) is highly multicultural. The early culture in Vietnam started with the Bronze Age Dong Son culture, Đông Sơn culture considered to be one of its most important progenitors for its Ancient history. Vietnamese culture was heavily influenced by Chinese culture due to the Vietnam under Chinese rule, 1000 years of Northern rule. In this period of time, Classical Chinese was used to write which was known as Literary Chinese in Vietnam, Hán văn. Vietnamese was written with chữ Hán, a Chinese characters, Chinese script, and a Vietnamese derived script (''chữ Nôm'') from Chinese characters, but which included invented characters to represent native Vietnamese words. These scripts were known collectively as chữ Hán Nôm.
