Mērsrags Municipality
Mērsrags Municipality ( lv, Mērsraga novads) is a former administrative unit of Latvia, formed in 2011. As of 2020, the population was 1,407. History In 2009, Roja Municipality was formed by merging Mērsrags Parish and Roja Parish, both at the coast of the Baltic Sea. In January 2010, the residents of Mērsraga in a general meeting decided to withdraw from the new municipality and create an independent Mērsrags municipality. In September 2010, the national parliament Saeima in a first reading supported a change of the law of administrative territories and populated areas for the establishment of Mērsrags municipality. Separate Roja and Mērsrags municipality council elections took place on 18 December 2010. Officially, Mērsrags Municipality came into life on 3 January 2011. Administrative Divisions Of Latvia
The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (''novadi'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, plural''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional. In response, the Saeima decided to preserve the existence of Varakļāni Municipality as a 43rd local government unit. Mērsrags
Mērsrags (german: Markgrafen) is a small harbor town in Talsi Municipality in the Courland region of Latvia, located on the west coast of the Gulf of Riga, beside Lake Engure and surrounded by extensive woodlands. The total area of the former Mērsrags municipality was 109 km2 (10896.2 ha). 63.7% of this area was woodland and Lake Engure covered 20.4%. The coastline was about 12 km. long. The town center is some 42 km from Talsi, the main city of the area, and some 95 km. from the capital, Riga. Mērsrags had a population of 1986 in June 2008. Many types of landscape can be seen; seaside, lake reservation, everglades, lagoons, the bed of the dried-up Litorīnas lake (Litorīnas ezers), the sand dune forest, and rural and urban landscapes. Roja Municipality
Roja Municipality ( lv, Rojas novads) is a former municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Mērsrags parish and Roja parish the administrative centre being Roja. Since 2010 a separate Mērsrags municipality has been created. The population in 2020 was 3,368. On 1 July 2021, Roja Municipality ceased to exist and its territory was merged into Talsi Municipality. Merger (politics)
A merger, consolidation or amalgamation, in a political or administrative sense, is the combination of two or more political or administrative entities, such as municipality, municipalities (in other words city, cities, towns, etc.), county, counties, districts, etc., into a single entity. This term is used when the process occurs within a sovereign entity. Unbalanced growth or outward expansion of one neighbor may necessitate an administrative decision to merge (see urban sprawl). In some cases, common perception of continuity may be a factor in prompting such a process (see conurbation). Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that is enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the North and Central European Plain. The sea stretches from 53°N to 66°N latitude and from 10°E to 30°E longitude. Saeima
The Saeima () is the parliament of the Latvia, Republic of Latvia. It is a unicameral parliament consisting of 100 members who are elected by proportional representation, with seats allocated to political parties which gain at least 5% of the popular vote.
