Nemacolin Woodlands Resort
Nemacolin (formerly known as Nemacolin Woodlands Resort) is a four seasons resort in Farmington, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The resort is owned by Maggie Hardy Knox, president of the 84 Lumber Company, and was founded by her father, Joseph Hardy. It includes The Lodge at Nemacolin, a Tudor Revival-style hotel which is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. Located at the center of Nemacolin, it was the hunting lodge of Pittsburgh businessman Willard F. Rockwell, who had it built in 1968. The resort also includes a casino called Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin. History The resort is named after Chief Nemacolin, a native Delaware Indian who in 1740 trailblazed a route through the Laurel Highlands mountains between what is now Cumberland, Maryland and Brownsville, Pennsylvania. 84 Lumber Classic
The Pennsylvania Classic was a golf tournament on the PGA Tour, held from 2000 through 2006 at three different Pennsylvania courses. The event's final title sponsor was lumber company 84 Lumber. The host course from 2003 to 2006 was Mystic Rock near Farmington, designed by Pete Dye and part of the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, owned by 84 Lumber founder Joseph Hardy. Before the move to Mystic Rock, it was played outside Philadelphia in 2000 and 2002 at Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, with the 2001 event at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier. The 2001 event was the first PGA Tour tournament staged after the September 11, 2001 attacks; that year's venue, Laurel Valley, was about west of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Airlines Flight 93 went down. Pete Dye
Paul Dye Jr. (December 29, 1925 – January 9, 2020), known as Pete Dye, was an American golf course designer and a member of a family of course designers. He was married to fellow designer and amateur champion Alice Dye. Early life Dye was born on December 29, 1925, in Urbana, Ohio. He was the son of Paul F. "Pink" and Elizabeth Dye. A few years before Dye's birth, his father became involved with golf and built a nine-hole course on family land in Champaign County called the "Urbana Country Club." As a youngster, he worked and played that course. While attending Urbana High School, he won the Ohio state high school golf championship, and medaled in the state amateur golf championship, all before entering the U.S. Army at age 18 in 1944 during World War II. Farmington is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located along U.S. Route 40, the National Road, about southeast of Pittsburgh, and is the closest settlement to Fort Necessity National Battlefield. A hazard is an area of a golf course in the sport of golf which provides a difficult obstacle, which may be of two types: (1) water hazards such as lakes and rivers; and (2) man-made hazards such as bunkers.
