Myotis Zenatius
The Zenati myotis (''Myotis zenatius'') is a rare species of mouse-eared bat that is restricted to North Africa. It is very rare in Morocco, being restricted to just four localities ranging from the Rif to the Atlas Mountains. Aside from Morocco, it is only known from three populations in northern Algeria, although it is possible that populations may exist in Tunisia. There are two genetically distinct haplogroups in the Atlas Mountains that could be further considered distinct subpopulations. The mouse-eared bats or myotises are a diverse and widespread genus (''Myotis'') of bats within the family Vespertilionidae. The noun "''myotis''" itself is a New Latin construction, from the Greek language, Greek "''muós'' (meaning "mouse") and "''oûs''" (meaning ear), literally translating to "mouse-eared". Relationships ''Myotis'' has historically been included in the subfamily Vespertilioninae, but was classified in its own subfamily, Myotinae, by Nancy Simmons in 1998. Escalera's bat (''Myotis escalerai'') is a European bat in the genus ''Myotis'', found in Spain (including the Balearic Islands), Portugal, and far southern France. Although the species was first named in 1904, it was included in Natterer's bat (''Myotis nattereri'') until molecular studies, first published in 2006, demonstrated that the two are distinct species. ''M. escalerai'' is most closely related to an unnamed species from Morocco. Unlike ''M. nattereri'', which lives in small groups in tree holes, ''M. escalerai'' forms large colonies in caves. Females start to aggregate in late spring in maternity colonies, and their young are born in summer. The species spends each winter in hibernation colonies, usually in caves or basements. The cryptic myotis (''Myotis crypticus'') is a European vespertilionid bat. It is a member of the Natterer's bat (''M. nattereri'') species complex, and is also the closest living relative of ''M. nattereri''. It is mostly distributed across European countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, from Spain west to Austria, north to Switzerland, and south to most of the Italian Peninsula. Natterer's bat (''Myotis nattereri'') is a European vespertilionid bat with pale wings. It has brown fur tending to greyish-white on its underside. It is found across most of the continent of Europe, parts of the Near East and North Africa. It feeds on insects and other invertebrates which it catches on the wing or pursues on the ground.
