Musical Chairs (1955 TV Series)
''Musical Chairs'' is an American primetime panel game show that ran from July 9 to September 17, 1955 on NBC. The host was Bill Leyden and the show featured voice actor Mel Blanc, composer Johnny Mercer, and orchestra leader Bobby Troup as regular panelists. Troup's band, the Troup Group, provided the music for the game show, often with the assistance of the Cheerleaders singing group or members of the panel itself. The show was a summer replacement series on NBC after a successful two-year run in Los Angeles. Format The program followed a format that was pioneered by the long-running radio program ''Information Please'' (which itself became a summer replacement series for CBS in 1952). Viewers were encouraged to mail questions about music to the network in an attempt to challenge the knowledge of a four-person panel (the three regular panelists plus a guest). Helen O'Connell (May 23, 1920 – September 9, 1993) was an American singer, actress, and hostess, described as "the quintessential big band singer of the 1940s". Early life Born in Lima, Ohio, O'Connell grew up in Toledo, Ohio. By the time she was 15, she and her older sister, Alice, were singing duets in clubs and hotels and on radio stations in Toledo. Career O'Connell launched her career as a big-band singer with Larry Funk and his Band of a Thousand Melodies. She was singing with Funk's band in Greenwich Village when Jimmy Dorsey's manager discovered her. O'Connell joined the Dorsey band in 1939 and achieved her best selling records in the early 1940s with " Green Eyes", " Amapola," "Tangerine" and " Yours". ''It Could Be You'' is a television game show produced by Ralph Edwards, Ralph Edwards Productions in the late 1950s in the United States, broadcast daily in the weekday daytime schedule for five years 1956–1961, and weekly in the evening on-and-off over three years 1958–1961. Bill Leyden was the host, and Wendell Niles was the announcer. Details ''It Could Be You'' used a variation of the format made famous in another popular show of the time, ''Queen for a Day'', where a woman who had gone through many hardships in her life was selected and awarded prizes. However, ''It Could Be You'', though still awarding prizes, focused most often on a woman's more embarrassing moments — for example: being seen by a neighbor while getting out of a bathtub, or engaging in a romantic interlude with a boyfriend while parked next to a bus full of tourists. ''Information Please'' is an American radio quiz show, created by Dan Golenpaul, which aired on NBC from May 17, 1938, to April 22, 1951. The title was the contemporary phrase used to request from telephone operators what was then called "information" and later called "directory assistance". The series was moderated by Clifton Fadiman. A panel of experts would attempt to answer questions submitted by listeners. For the first few shows, a listener was paid $2 for a question that was used, and $5 more if the experts could not answer it correctly. When the show got its first sponsor (Canada Dry), the total amounts were increased to $5 and $10 respectively. A complete ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' was later added to the prize for questions that stumped the panel. The amounts rose to $10 and $25 when Lucky Strike took over sponsorship of the program. Bill Leyden
William Leyden (February 1, 1917,Born in 1917 peSocial Security Death Index under name William Leyden/ref> in Chicago, Illinois – March 11, 1970, in Hollywood, California) was a television game show host and announcer who emceed six game shows, including ''It Could Be You'' (1956–61), ''Your First Impression'' (1962–64, with Dennis James), and ''You're Putting Me On'' (1969). In addition, he hosted movies on KTTV, and played small roles in a handful of films, including Jerry Lewis's '' The Patsy'' (1964). During World War II Leyden served in the Marine Corps. Robert William Troup Jr. (October 18, 1918 – February 7, 1999) was an American actor, jazz pianist, singer, and songwriter. He wrote the song " Route 66" and acted in the role of Dr. Joe Early with his wife Julie London in the television program ''Emergency!'' in the 1970s.
