Music Of Alberta
Alberta has a diverse music scene of pop, rock, country, jazz, folk, caribbean, classical, and blues music. Music festivals in the Summers are representing these genres. Choral music, ethnic music of many nationalities, all are found in Alberta. The independent music scene was covered by independent magazines: Fast Forward Weekly in Calgary, and Vue Weekly in Edmonton, neither magazine is currently active. BeatRoute Magazine is still in publication, but covers a wider scope (western Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba). History Aboriginal music has been present in Alberta since the end of the last ice age, nearly 10,000 years ago in Southern Alberta, around 8,000 year ago in the North. Fast Forward Weekly
''Fast Forward Weekly'' (''FFWD'') was a news and entertainment weekly which provided news, alternative viewpoints, entertainment information, review articles and specialized advertising. It was distributed throughout Calgary, Banff and Canmore. It is owned by Great West Newspapers. With an assessed readership of 70,000 upon a distributed circulation of 30,000, the paper was one of the most widely circulated and well-respected alternative newspapers in Canada. The paper originated in December 1995 as Calgary's first alternative weekly publication. As of 2007, it was the only freely-distributed weekly newspaper of its type in the city, having outlasted a number of competitors including a short-lived Calgary edition of ''The Georgia Straight'', which had originally been called VOX, the long-running '' Calgary Mirror'' (which folded in 2001), and the ''Mirror''s successor, ''FYI Calgary In-Print'', which ran for only five months in 2001. Purple City Music Festival
Purple City Music Festival is a multi-day music festival and showcase for all ages, held in various live music venues and other locations in downtown Edmonton, the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta. Festival History The festival started out -- or grew out of -- the Up + Downtown Music Festival, which ran annually from 2013 to 2019. In 2020, Ryan Rathjen, a radio host on CJSR-FM, became executive director of the festival, and led its rebranding in an attempt to make the festival more inclusive and collaborative. Purple City 2021 was held outdoors in William Hawrelak Park. The following year, amid the easing of pandemic restrictions, the festival was held in various locations across the city, including Hawrelak Park and the Garneau Theatre. Big Valley Jamboree
The Big Valley Jamboree, commonly referred to as "BVJ", is an annual country music festival held in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. Established in 1992, the Jamboree is held during the Civic Holiday in August and features country singers from North America. Performers at BVJ have included Tim McGraw, Gary Allan, Kevin Costner, and Josh Turner in 2009 and Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, and Reba McEntire in 2015. The event draws thousands of campers and partygoers annually, with daily averages of 25,000 people attending the four-day event. Edmonton's Labatt Blues Festival
The Edmonton Blues Festival (formerly Edmonton's Labatt Blues Festival) is an annual blues music festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, which was first held in 1999. The festival runs for three days (a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) in mid-August at the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park. In 2008, the festival was the recipient of the 'Keeping The Blues Alive Award' from the Blues Foundation, based in Memphis, Tennessee.
