Museum Witt
The Museum Witt Munich (MWM) is a department of the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology. It is located in Munich, Germany, and has the world's leading collection of moths. Collection The museum was established in 1980 by Thomas J. Witt. His well-known family founded Witt Weiden, one of Germany's oldest mail-order houses. Since 2000 the museum has been part of the Zoologische Staatssammlung München (The Bavarian State Collection of Zoology) in Munich. The collection consists of about ten million specimens from all over the world. It is the largest collection of moths in the world. The Museum Witt has a collection of three to three and a half million butterflies, and the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology additional seven million butterflies. Moth
Moths are a paraphyletic group of insects that includes all members of the order Lepidoptera that are not butterflies, with moths making up the vast majority of the order. There are thought to be approximately 160,000 species of moth, many of which have yet to be described. Most species of moth are nocturnal, but there are also crepuscular and diurnal species. Thomas J
Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. Josef Witt GmbH (Witt-Gruppe) is a mail-order house, located in Weiden, Germany. The company is a 100% subsidiary of the Otto Group. The Zoologische Staatssammlung München (The Bavarian State Collection of Zoology) awards the Ritter-von-Spix-Medal to distinguished donors and benefactors of outstanding zoological collections.
