Murray Roth
Murray Roth (November 2, 1893 - 1938) was a writer and director of films in the United States. Earlier in his career Roth was the writer for film producer and director Bryan Foy but by late the 1920s began directing shorts in Brooklyn such as ''Lamchops''. He directed several short films for Vitaphone before moving to features including his first in 1933, ''Don't Bet on Love''. Roth also wrote the lyrics to George Gershwin's first published song, "When You Want 'Em, You Can't Get 'Em" . Bryan Foy
Bryan Foy (December 8, 1896 – April 20, 1977) was an American film producer and director. He produced more than 200 films between 1924 and 1963. He also directed 41 films between 1923 and 1934. He headed the B picture unit at Warner Bros. where he was known as "the keeper of the B's". Biography He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 8, 1896. He was the eldest son of the vaudeville star Eddie Foy and appeared with his father in the vaudeville act "Eddie Foy and The Seven Little Foys." The act broke up when Bryan Foy left to join the U.S. Army in World War I in 1918, after which his remaining siblings continued performing with their father under the title, "Eddie Foy and the Younger Foys", through 1923, when their father retired. He was also a songwriter, and by 1916 had several published songs, including "My Honolulu Girl". Foy led Warners B picture unit until 1942 when the studio ended their second features. ''Yamekraw, a Negro Rhapsody'' is a jazz musical composition written by James P. Johnson in 1927 about a neighborhood of Savannah, Georgia. It was a response to George Gershwin's ''Rhapsody in Blue''. It was initially composed for the piano, but was first performed at Carnegie Hall as a jazz-like orchestral arrangement. A recording was made of Johnson performing the music on piano. A film inspired by the song was also made. Song name Yamacraw was a black neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia.
