The mayor of Murphysboro is Will Stephens. The government consists of the mayor and 10 city aldermen. Geography Murphysboro is located at (37.767245, -89.337346). According to the 2010 census, Murphysboro has a total area of , of which (or 98.38%) is land and (or 1.62%) is water. Murphysboro is located southeast of Kinkaid Lake. On March 18, 1925, one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in recorded history generated at least twelve significant tornadoes and spanned a large portion of the midwestern and southern United States. In all, at least 751 people were killed and more than 2,298 were injured, making the outbreak the deadliest tornado outbreak, March 18 the deadliest tornado day, and 1925 the deadliest tornado year in U.S. history. Kinkaid Lake is a reservoir located in southwestern Illinois. Entirely within Jackson County, the lake is approximately northwest of Murphysboro and southeast of St. Louis.
