Axel Munthe
Axel Martin Fredrik Munthe (31 October 1857 – 11 February 1949) was a Swedish-born medical doctor and psychiatrist, best known as the author of ''The Story of San Michele'', an autobiographical account of his life and work. He spoke several languages (Swedish, English, French, Italian fluently, and German at least passably), grew up in Sweden, attended medical school there, then studied medicine in Paris and opened his first practice in France. He was married to a wealthy Englishwoman and spent most of his adult life in Italy. His philanthropic nature often led him to treat the poor without charge, and he risked his life on several occasions to offer medical help in times of war, disaster, or plague. As an advocate of animal rights, he purchased land to create a bird sanctuary near his home in Italy, argued for bans on painful traps, and himself kept pets as diverse as an owl and a baboon, as well as many types of dog. Hugo Munthe-Kaas
Hugo Conrad Munthe-Kaas Distinguished Service Medal (United Kingdom), DSM (3 February 1922 – 19 March 2012) was a Norway, Norwegian intelligence agent and resistance fighter during World War II. He received seventeen decorations for his war service. From the 1970s he was active in the Progress Party (Norway), Progress Party, where he was a city council member in Oslo and deputy Parliament of Norway, MP. He was an honorary party member. Gerhard Peter Frantz Munthe (19 July 1849 in Elverum, Hedmark – 15 January 1929 in Lysaker, Bærum) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator. Background Munthe was born in Elverum to physician Christopher Pavels Munthe (1816–1884) and his wife Christine Margrethe Pavels Aabel (1827–1887). Gustaf Munthe (1896–1962)
Gustaf Lorentz Munthe (3 July 1896 – 25 November 1962) was a Swedish writer, art historian and art teacher. He was head of Röhsska Craft Art Museum in Gothenburg from 1924 to 1945 and was also prolific as a writer of the museum's publications. During World War II, Munthe served as head of the M Group of the intelligence agency C-byrån in Gothenburg during World War II, helping the Norwegian resistance movement. He served as chairman and was a member of a number of associations, companies, foundations, guilds and societies. Anna Katarina Fredrika Munthe-Norstedt (28 July 1854 – 17 April 1936) was a Swedish painter known for still-lifes and interiors. She also worked with genre painting and portraits. Biography Anna Munthe-Norstedt was born in the parish of Döderhult in Oskarshamn, Sweden. Ludvig Munthe (11 March 1841 – 30 March 1896) was a Norwegian-born, German landscape painter. Biography Ludvig Munthe was born at Årøy, near Sogndal in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. He came to Bergen in 1858 where he was first instructed by Franz Wilhelm Schiertz, a German painter and architect residing in Norway. Munthe later moved to Düsseldorf where he became a pupil of Albert Flamm at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He subsequently selected Düsseldorf for his permanent residence. Hans Zanna Kaas (noble family), Munthe-Kaas (born 28 March 1961) is a Norway, Norwegian mathematician at the University of Bergen, and UiT The Arctic University of Norway working in the area of computational mathematics in the borderland between pure and applied mathematics and computer science. Herman Munthe-Kaas (25 May 1890 – 5 May 1977) was a Norwegian architect. He was primarily known for his functionalist building designs. Biography Munthe-Kaas was born at Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Marius William Munthe-Kaas (1856-1926) and Hermine Cathrine Blichfeldt (1863-1937). Munthe-Kaas graduated from Kristiania tekniske skole (now Oslo University College) in 1910 and Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry (''Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole'') in 1912. Major Malcolm Grane Ludovic Martin Munthe MC (30 January 1910 – 24 November 1995) was a British soldier, writer, and curator, and son of the Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe and his English second wife Hilda Pennington-Mellor. Early life and Second World War Brought up between the Swedish court, Italy, and Britain, where his mother owned two houses, Hellens in Herefordshire and Southside House in Wimbledon, Malcolm Munthe became a British citizen at the outbreak of World War II in order to fight, since Sweden would be neutral throughout the war.
