Munster Derby
Munster Derby is the name given to a football derby contested by teams from the larger football clubs in Munster. The term is frequently used to describe games between Cork City FC and Waterford FC, as well as games between Cork City and Limerick-based teams like Limerick FC and Treaty United. It is also occasionally used to describe games between Waterford and Limerick-based teams. Cork v Limerick-based teams Football clubs based in Cork and Limerick both have strong local support. Cork City, for example, have one of the biggest support bases in the League of Ireland, and as of early 2017 had average attendances of between four and five thousand per home game, compared to a league average of approximately 1,500. Munster ( gle, an Mhumhain or ) is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the south of Ireland. Askeaton
Askeaton (, Waterfall of Géitine, also historically spelt Askettin), is a town in County Limerick, Ireland. The town on the N69, the road between Limerick and Tralee, is built on the banks of the River Deel some 3 km upstream from the estuary of the River Shannon. Among the historic structures in the town are a castle dating from 1199 and a Franciscan friary dating from 1389. Munster Senior Cup (association Football)
The Munster Senior Cup is an association football cup competition organized by the Munster Football Association. Entrants include League of Ireland clubs such as Cork City, Cobh Ramblers and Waterford who are affiliated to the MFA, as well as clubs from the Munster Senior League. History Like the Munster Football Association itself, the Munster Senior Cup was originally inaugurated in 1901. It was initially dominated by British Army regimental teams. Among the early winners were the Royal Engineers, one of the pioneering teams of association football in England. The Football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup), known as the Extra.ie FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City from Northern Ireland). The League of Ireland Cup ( ga, Corn Sraithe na hÉireann), also referred to in Ireland as the 'League Cup', is an annual knockout competition in men's football in the Republic of Ireland. It is contested by League of Ireland clubs and invited clubs from the lower levels of the Republic of Ireland football league system. It has been sponsored by Electronic Arts and branded the EA Sports Cup since 2009. The competition began in 1973–74, replacing the League of Ireland Shield and the Dublin City Cup. It has had several formats since its inception and has been a knock-out competition since 2005. As there is no European qualification for winners of the League of Ireland Cup, it has a lower status than the FAI Cup and is therefore seen as the third most important trophy in the Irish playing season.
