Municipal Action Group
{{Short description, Political party The Municipal Action Group (MAG; French: Groupe d'action municipale) was a municipal political party that existed from 1978 to 1985 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Origins The Municipal Action Group was formed in 1978 as a breakaway from the progressive Montreal Citizens' Movement (MCM), which had become the official opposition on Montreal city council in the 1974 municipal election. The MCM was initially supported by a heterogeneous community that included trade unionists, Parti Québécois and New Democratic Party supporters, and a variety of social activists. The party later became divided between its radical and centrist members, with some of the centrists forming the nucleus of the MAG. Both parties were regarded as being to the left of mayor Jean Drapeau's Civic Party, which dominated city politics in this period. Jean Doré
Jean Doré (12 December 1944 – 15 June 2015) was a Canadian politician and mayor of the City of Montreal, Quebec. Background Doré studied law at the Université de Montréal, where he was president of the student union from 1967 to 1968. He received a Master's Degree of Political Science from McGill University. In the early seventies Doré became a founding member of the progressive '' Montreal Citizens' Movement (MCM)'', also known as ''Rassemblement des citoyens et citoyennes de Montréal'' (RCM) in French, where he started as treasurer and eventually became party leader in 1982. From 1972 to 1975, Doré was director of the ''Fédération des associations d'économie familiale''. He hosted a consumer affairs show on the Radio-Québec public television network. Michael Fainstat
Michael Fainstat (29 August 1923 – 29 December 2010) was a Canadian politician and a city councillor in Montreal, Quebec. Background In the early seventies Fainstat became a founding member of the progressive ''Montreal Citizens' Movement'', also known as ''Rassemblement des citoyens et citoyennes de Montréal (RCM)'' in French. City councillor Fainstat was elected to Montreal's city council in 1974 against Civic incumbent James Bellin with 17 other RCM candidates, and represented the district of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. He was the only RCM candidate to win a seat in 1978. He was re-elected in the district of La-Confédération in 1982 and 1986. Chairman of the executive committee Fainstat served as Montreal's chairman of the executive committee from 1986 to 1990. A coalition government is a form of government in which political parties cooperate to form a government. The usual reason for such an arrangement is that no single party has achieved an absolute majority after an election, an atypical outcome in nations with majoritarian electoral systems, but common under proportional representation. Serge Joyal
Serge Joyal (born February 1, 1945) is a Canadian politician who served in the House of Commons of Canada from 1974 to 1984 and subsequently in the Senate of Canada from 1997 to 2020. Career A lawyer by profession, Joyal served as vice-president of the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1974 general election and remained a Liberal Member of Parliament for ten years. In 1978, Joyal, along with a group of concerned Montreal citizens that included Nick Auf der Maur and Robert Keaton, co-founded the Municipal Action Group ("MAG"). Joyal was particularly well known at the time for having supported L’Association des gens de l’air, a group which was criticizing the lack of spoken French by airport controllers.
